I suppose this is the beginning of it, as the NW or NW by W increases in strength, old pines tossing about; 29.6 degrees (has been 32) and humidity has dropped to 27%. Hasn't really been sunny all day.

Good on yah Richard! _b

I really like this site for looking at sat images for events such as this one, really shows where all this moisture is coming from, this is a loop for the last 48 hrs, hint: turn it up to full speed!

This will be quite a significant event for the likes of Golden Bay and around to Nelson by the looks, could be some flooding about by this time tomorrow.
As ive said earlier a welcome 30+mm for Canterbury coming, hopefully we get to hear some rumbles too.

Yeah Golden Bay will cop it although I think Nelson itself will miss most of it (the town that is, not the make area MS refers to as Nelson as most of that is Tasman ;) ), due to the NW nature of stream we'll get a fair bit of protection from the NW ranges. Still Cable Bay and Hira could get their first serious flooding event since they had 100-150mm in 12 hours back at the end of September, especially considering most of the land up there is now close to being saturated.

its events like this where it would be neat to have a radar on the west coast up nice and high so it can pick up the orographic forced rainfall

Steady rain. 12mm today so far with near gale Northerlies here now in Westport. Looks like a stormy night ahead. Plenty of rain between 9pm and 6am it would seem looking at the models.

Rain has just begun here - falling in big drops! - almost no wind at the moment but I guess the cloud is moving across from NW. Pressure still falling; 22.0 degrees, 36% humidity. (Rain most refreshing after such a hot dry day.)

No wind to speak of overnight at all, but continuing good steady rain which has formed puddles on driveway and lawn; 13.9 degrees now, 84% humidity, pressure low and still falling; breeze is now coming from the south. NB the wind we had earlier yesterday was very much westerly, rather than true NW. Complete overcast; going to light the fire.
