Biggest weather events of 2010

Unread post by NZstorm »

There were two stand outs,

1 The 4 day run of electrical storms over the central North Island in late January. Huge amount of lightning.

2 The Southland snowstorm is September.

Can't think of any others. Maybe the recent floods at the top of the SI.

I thought that massive storm that passed South of NZ in mid-late September was pretty significant. Very strong winds the length of the country despite the low center not even crossing the country

yes, that week of westerly gales in the middle of september that produced some short lived tornadoes on that fast moving front that started it all off was a good one , here at least (lots of lightning with it, looked sort of evil as it approached! (at 130 kmh )

Yup the Waikato Thunderstorms in mid to late Jan was a BIG standout point for the year.

The Southland snow storm.

The stormchasing in Waikato back in January will stay in the memory for a long time.

Yup you missed something rare alright, its not often in the Waikato that you get tstorms acting like a strobe light.

Hopefully you will be on the chase when the next outbreak comes, LOL

I should say for us it was the nor'west gale on September 5th (day after the earthquake) which blew down so many trees around this area: strongest for some time. Rotten weekend all round!

Not a very interesting year here either. Will have to consol my weather diary to see if I can find anything.
...but nationally, yes the Southland Snow storm and the heavy rain event just recently would have to stand out.

It seems like its only me, but it feels like its been a shocker here - very dry in the first few months of the year, exceptionally wet over the winter (almost a years worth of rain in 4-5 months) with a couple of flooding events, very dry again in the last few months, the worst gales we have had in our 8 years on this property just last week. Weatherwise as well as otherwise I am really glad 2010 is behind us.

I liked the March 12th cold front that swept through fast, and caused a nice looking storm in Wellington. Winds got upto 140kph.

Obviously for me it was the snowstorm down here, up to that point, winter had been a fizzer for sure, if only ever winter could produce dumps like that!
