Thanks for the comments!
David, its probably the best Mammatus display I've seen in the flesh (no pun intended! ), especially for a non-storm display and for the definition in the structure.

Re: General January Weather
Rain here in rangiora with a strong NW.
Just got home from twizel and what a windy trip that was, trailer with about 20 large rowing boats got tipped over in the strong winds at windwhistle and the fire service told us to go down to the main highway and not to keep going on the inland road
I see M/S have a wind warning out for only north canterbury think they need to include the other parts of canterbury as well.

Re: General January Weather
Double Rainbow all the way !!!!!!
Nah, well it's a single rainbow but very impressive, over chch now from vantage point of Merivale looking E. Nice sunset this evening with the NW arch, sun came out about 5 minutes ago as it ducked below the arch, sky is now lighting up a firey red.

Neat photos weetbix.
Well MS were smack on with the wind warnings, been one horrendous night here in NW Grandcentral but its also the worse kind of NW too the one that comes through with humongous gusts, gota be all of the 130km and some.
A hell of a warm wind though 20.8C at 5.41am

Re: General January Weather
Wow, it's 6:15 but it's not the birds that woke me up this morning, it's the cicadas! They're going full force, I don't think I've ever heard them going for it this early in the morning, tho having said that it is a gorgeous calm morning @ 20 degrees right now.

Re: General January Weather
We get the cicadas in late summer early in the mornings but not yet this year, often februarys better when humid, next few days weather looks sinister though, though I recall quite a large number of the 1st week or so of february with westerly flows.

Re: General January Weather
I see the westerlies are being funnelled down from the upper Waitemata Harbour at about 30 kts atm. Might be a bit much for the regatta's smaller boats.

Re: General January Weather
Sunny now with blue skies and small low white clouds being pushed toward us by a gentle to moderate east to southeasterly breeze. One of those days where the wind could do anything, however: a couple of hours ago, upper cloud was coming from south while lower cloud rushed beneath from the north-east. Now 21.5 degrees & rising, 62% humidity.

Yes, Richard. Indeed a brief southerly change, now a fine sunny day with NE although a little hazy.
Nice line of Cu to the south of here at the moment.

Re: General January Weather
Noticed wind had risen to a strong gusty easterly so checked outdoors: yes, a great roiling white Cumulus cloud to the east, maybe over Ashburton? (I know they're always miles further away than they appear at first!), very dark beneath it; as I expected earlier, wispy white clouds rushing across from southeast and west also. Busy sky at moment. Sunny, 21.3 degrees, 47% humidity.

YES. Nice line of Cu congestus like a convergence line slowly moving towards here.
Expect a change shortly. Took some photos but a bit too hazy.
