Cloudy here with a bit of drizzle over night (dust settler) 13.3 at the moment and should come out hot before the NW wind change later.

Re: General January Weather
Anyone else try to look at the SiteCam HD webcam looking over Auckland city last night? I went to check it to see if I could see the skytower fireworks (no view of skytower from home) and it stopped working at 11.55pm and cam back around 12.30am with no previous images existing!
Talk about weird!
Oh well Ricky's webcam caught it anyway

Re: General January Weather
Looks like a good SW in Auckland today but the flow goes NE tomorrow and NW Monday by the looks. Potential there for the temperatures to go up Sunday/Monday.
Those Auckland fireworks where over the Harbour last night with the Sky Tower more of a side show.

Re: General January Weather
we watched the sky tower from the harbour beach...could see 2 lots of fireworks..was wondering where the other lot was from...
the 17C temperature last night seemed colder than you would think 17C would be, with the wind blowing....
to do with the dew point i guess...a bit drier air and it would not have felt as cold...
looking like a return to NE winds for the NI later this week

Were a fair few fireworks here but the best show was put on by mother nature;

SW flows are mostly sunny this time of year Michael, enjoy .Michael wrote:Fine,cooler,16c this morning,of course wind is already picking up given little isobaric pressure.(infact to some degree all night) Hurry up la nina pattern.
Comfortable weather today( dewpoints 15C) currently sunny 21C, low was 17C,
Looks like High preasure will dominate our weather week, a large high will become slow moving east of NZ, cloudy humid weather later in the week.

Re: General January Weather
Sunburnt today, even with the SW's.. but thats due to 6 kids here having a water fight & chasing Geese (which chased them back).. saw the fireworks near the skytower last night from here.. most impressive.
As is the fire burning at Waiuku with 4 choppers waterbombing and a dozer on its way in to create a firebreak.. smoked us out completely to the point we had to close up shop & got as far as Hunua where it smoked them out also.
Happy New Year all

Re: General January Weather
Not a bad start to the year with a nice day, although as John mentioned that NE did get up abit.
Some weaker forms of CU again this evening, and sticking the head out the door just now was surprised to hear rain drops falling nice big ones too.
No rain recorded here overnight so must have been very localised stuff.

Re: General January Weather
Strong to gale westerly this morning and over night, got woken just after 3.00 by flashes of light,so to get up then and go have a look.It wasn't over head sheet lightening that from time to time accompanies a NW front over this area, but fork lightening about 10-15 km away towards the mountains.Over night low of 16C now 18.4C

Re: General January Weather
Looks like the temperatures will hit 30C over inland NI next couple of days given the warm upper level airmass.
An interesting case of elevated convection over the South Island last 24hrs.but fork lightening about 10-15 km away towards the mountains.

Re: General January Weather
It sure is blowing a good gale out there, nothing in the forecasts or warnings to suggest this.
Got gusts up around 75-80kmh at times here in the east, lost power briefly for about 5 minutes earlier on.
Thats odd its not often you hear about possible tornadoes in the Otago region, has there ever been any down there before?.

Re: General January Weather
yes, remember that clip of the tornado at Waikouaiti just north of Dunedin a couple of Januarys back.Thats odd its not often you hear about possible tornadoes in the Otago region, has there ever been any down there before?.
The shear in Otago is through the roof but the air looks a bit dry and I'm not convinced they'll be instability down there. However, the gfs does develop convection SW of Dunedin this afternoon. 500mb flow modeled at 80kts!
