Re: General January Weather
Just talking to a few people before who said there was a thunderstorm which past out east this morning, long thunder rumbles were heard even from in Christchurch.
Radar suggests it started around Waikari before heading SE and over Cheviot after 10am, which is interesting considering there was nothing in the forecasts to suggest this could happen.
The wind must have carried the thunder some distance, but i didnt hear it had a good sleep in though.

Re: General January Weather
Interesting report Jason. Elevated thunderstorms arrived on the West Coast/Fiordland last night with some showers getting across the alps into Canterbury overnight/morning. Elevated storms can be difficult to forecast as the instability does not show up in the traditional methods of thunderstorm forecasting. (lifted index). The instability moved away to the east this morning.

My one is a Skywatch explorer 2 and I think it's reasonably accurate?
29.3 now and the wind continues its decent blow but gusting only about 70 now
My friend in Cust said they had great thunder and wildfire between 2 and 4am this morn.

Re: General January Weather
This tracker shows some lightning occurred over the foot hills, I have found this tracker to be quite sensitive so quite a good guide for storm occurrence and location.
I see a weak storm also shows up over East Cape late yesterday

Re: General January Weather
I heard very loud thunder rumbles in Bexley. Woke me up and just sat back and enjoyed the sound. Not a drop of rain.

Re: General January Weather
Has been up to 32.3 here today, temp. has fallen over last half-hour to 28.1; wind strength comes and goes, direction from NW through to a cooler SW and then back again; sky has clouded over & some watery-looking cloud coming across from WSW; 37% humidity. Pressure rising...

Try being driven down the road with it out the window. Compare the cars speed to the anenometer, better still, compare it with a GPS. Don't exceed it's maximum rating!cantygal wrote:My one is a Skywatch explorer 2 and I think it's reasonably accurate?

Re: General January Weather
Seems to have gone back to NW now.
We had a few spots of rain around 2pm, but was very brief and not enough to wet the ground, a cracker day, though feels a little too warm for me
thinking of heading out to catch some sunset shots this evening. Found a cool site - Christchurch Webcam - which has a controllable webcam positioned on Huntsbury hill in the port hills, you can get a good view of the whole city & off to the west. Looking @ the webcam would indicate it is partially clear off to the west so might be in for some late sunshine in town with the chance of a sunset. I bought the old mans DSLR camera off him over christmas given he never uses it, so keen to try it out.

Re: General January Weather
That particular shower didn't have any thunder and lightening with it Jase, but what was amazing about was how heavy it was though only briefly(4mm),ended up moving NE and missed Cheviot all together.what T&L we did have here was much earlier during the night.Jasestorm wrote:Just talking to a few people before who said there was a thunderstorm which past out east this morning, long thunder rumbles were heard even from in Christchurch.

Lovely and calm here this morning on 16.5C,doesn't look like the weather is going to be overly riveting later

Perfect anticyclonic conditions for Auckland again today. Clear with light winds. Afternoon temps should reach 26-27C.

Re: General January Weather
13.2 degrees here and while cloud up top is still coming across from the west, light low shreds of misty cloud are coming in from south-east, with murk visible on horizon in southerly quarter. Sunshine still, 80% humidity, gentle southerly breeze.

Even places with a sea breeze?NZstorm wrote:Perfect anticyclonic conditions for Auckland again today. Clear with light winds. Afternoon temps should reach 26-27C.
The sea breeze had quite a strong moderating effect on the temperature here yesterday - I expected it to reach 25 even with the sea breeze but it didn't.

Re: General January Weather
Yet another glorious day here in Hastings, clear blue skies, very slight NW breeze, currently 27C.
Yesterday was much the same, clear skies, slight N breeze and high of 28C. We spent most of the day in Waipukurau, there was no breeze and was 30C when we left at 3pm.

Re: General January Weather
Between sea breezes at my place yesterday, calm and hot in the sun before the SW sea breeze won mid afternoon and pushed through to the east coast early evening, no real convergence cumulus line yesterday.

Re: General January Weather
I think the westcoast breeze SW or W depending where you are will be dominant today given the ridge position.Sunshine here like much elsewhere today.

Re: General January Weather
The west coast breeze usually wins every time - we get the change here in the evening usually. Turned light SW around 6pm yesterday. Just the odd NE puff at the momentMichael wrote:I think the westcoast breeze SW or W depending where you are will be dominant today given the ridge position.Sunshine here like much elsewhere today.
