2010 equal warmest on record for the Globe

Unread post by Manukau heads obs »

a good read
http://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/4536 ... equal-year

shows that last year was equal to 2005 as equal warmest on record
"The warmth this year reinforces the notion that we are seeing climate change," said David Easterling, chief of scientific services at the climatic data centre. Nine of the 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2000, he noted. The exception was 1998, which is the third warmest year on record going back to 1880.

Easterling said the data "unequivocally" disproves claims that climate warming ended in 2005.

if with a developing La Nina, which normaly means cooler global temperatures, last year was the equal hottest on record...

Global air temperatures do follow ENSO events, but tend to lag by around 6 months, and if you look at the monthly satellite data it was not until November and December that global air temperatures started to plummet in response to the La Nina. There is a lot more cooling in the pipeline for this year.

It could be suggested that the opposite of what you are implying is more interesting - if with the biggest El Nino since 1998 contributing substantially to the 2010 global anomaly it was only possible to tie with 2005 (which had a much smaller El Nino), and be similar to 1998, then what does that imply about background temperature tends (ie with the ENSO influence removed)?

La nina started in May 2010
the El Nino before that did not last very long
La Ninas have been more the norm recently

also this shows that 2010 Elnino was no the strongest since 1998

I would rate the early ones stronger

The multi-variate ENSO index is generally considered to provide a better handle on ENSO than the SOI values alone.
