Re: Significant tropical-rain event 22-25 Jan
Valid to: 12:00am Monday 24 January 2011
Issued at: 8:26am Sunday 23 January 2011
A trough of low pressure lies over the North Island. A low of subtropical origin lying north of New Zealand at 8am is moving southwards and should move onto Northland this evening. A broad sheet of rain associated with both these systems covers the North Island, with heavy rain expected in many northern and central areas. See latest Severe Weather Warning and Watch for more detail.
Maybe that's why the new warnings have come out?

Re: Significant tropical-rain event 22-25 Jan
M/S have caught up with the fact the rain has eased in the north now
Heavy rain is easing about Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula this morning, but further significant heavy rain is likely today and early Monday in regions from Waikato down to Whanganui and the central North Island high country, and across the Bay of Plenty to Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.

Met Service should have had a better handle on the situation this morning as it was obvious the warm front was about to clear the north.

Yeah, the rain had pretty much cleared Northland before they put the warnings out. I doubt we'll even see another 20mm hereNZstorm wrote:Met Service should have had a better handle on the situation this morning as it was obvious the warm front was about to clear the north.

Re: Significant tropical-rain event 22-25 Jan
Now that we are into the warm sector the rainfall options are drizzle or convective showers. Not too sure about the convection but brief heavy showers still possible I guess, more particularly if there is any heating.

No condensation on the house windows here, 22.8 in 21.2 out at present. But I note glass in structures outside do have some condensation on them. Rain has now eased and the wind is picking up.

Re: Significant tropical-rain event 22-25 Jan
Gday Avalanche - I see MS are keeping a watch open for the Wairarapa (not sure about WLG), we have had 11.6mm today (since 9am) and 16mm overnight. Others will know more detail, but I don't think that the rainfall rates and amounts meet warning criteria and/or are sufficient to issue a warning at this stage for the Lower NI. Upper NI areas have been receiving in excess of 20mm per hour......
