Sorry to all the folk up north who endured a rough night.
Nev your comment regarding cyclones wasn't necessary really at the end of the day was it. I always think it's best to be helpful in a positive kind of way when required :)

I see that the M/S still had it as 978 with a very tight center off the bay of islands as it went past....
northland dodged a bullet as far as wind went! (but obviously not rain)
now that it has gone extra tropical you can see the tight center with the cloud spiraling into that
amazing
East cape might get some of the strong winds (although the now faster forward speed will reduce that on the SE quadrant)
wow, just checking rain totals: 199mm at kerikeri!, and 87mm at Ricky's in auckland!

Rain eased off here around 4am. Ended up with 178mm from midday yesterday.

Looks like the Coromandel's Castle Rock got about 275mm.

and I see Mangaiwai heads also got to 199mm
amazing belt of rain that moved SE
Coromandel must have copped alot of that too
I wonder what windspeed Great Barrier got as the center passed by?
the center is racing SE now, as the models predicted ( GFS did a great job on this system)

I'm back, no significant damage at my place. Got to 199.4mm and doesn't look like there will be any more, sky is blue with only the occasional cloud flying by.
Will grab the cameras and go for a drive soon.

have reached 42 knots (77kmh) here in a shower from the WSW
nothing out of the ordinary for here
I doubt we will get gusts to 60 kts as predicted, we should be peaking for windspeed over the next hour going by where the low is, etc
I see that surf reports from the coromandel are not bad yet, 3 to 5 foot waves, i.e 2m swell, not the predicted 4.5m swell....yet...

I'm glad to think the worst winds may not eventuate. I grieve for those who endured the horrendous rainfall and perhaps wondered what was going to happen next. My thanks to everyone who contributes to this thread, for excellent information and updates.

Huh, not sure what you mean? #-o I simply pointed out that Fergus and Drena were ex-TC's, whereas this one was apparently still intact, which means this is most likely the closest an intact TC has ever come to NZ.

Nice animation Vertigo. _b

Weather related outages
Date: 29-01-2011 07:38 am
Outages in the following areas were caused by last night's heavy rain.
- Wellsford,Waiteitei, Wayby, Whangapiro - 343 customers
-Te Hana - 560 customers
-Kaipara Flats - 56 customers

Would have expected more people to have lost power in Auckland.

Crikey! Will have to go and have a look...
'Two missing as house falls in storm' - NZ Herald

Two people are missing after a house collapsed at Onetangi, on Waiheke Island, as tropical cyclone Wilma battered the upper North Island overnight.

The house collapsed after being hit by a large slip and is one of more than 200 incidents keeping emergency services in the region busy...
