I'm in Tumara Park(Northern part of Christchurch) heard one clap of thunder and saw that bank of clouds travel toward North East. It's starting to get dark again. I'm suspecting it will be a typical let down of a storm in Christchurch!

Yes. I got a nice shot of that CB over your way. Not very big but looking thunderstormish even though just a single cell. Heard the sferic but not the thunder as it was too far away.
More dark stuff to the south but looking a bit 'topsy-turvy' with the real looking stuff just to the north of us.

Not much happening here. Looked good this morning there was some good looking CU down south out towards the hunter hills seems to have fizzled out now . There is some dark looking clouds around now but they dont look very thundery.

Heavy shower just passed nothing electrical with that one, another chasing its tail now so will see what this one brings.
Its interesting as its all in a chain from the SW to NE.

Here's some of my photos.
Sadly, clouds are now looking too flat to the south for any more interesting development

sorry, the titles are wrong from the below pictures. The 2nd picture should be the top one. The 3rd one should be the 2nd one and the bottom caption is the top one. . What a goof

Re: Thundery showers Canterbury 29th January!!
I was asleep to Ben. lol.
While watching the weather map on one news last night I thought to myself that situation looks condusive perhaps to some development. After a night of towning though I must admit I forgot about it all. It wasn't overally convincing but better then I've seen in a while.
Guess that's about what we got anyway, nothing overally convincing but something.
Cheers
Aaron

Another shower this time abit heavier for awhile, drops looked like they were melted hail pellets.
It does look to be stablising now, heres some photos i took anyway.
I tried to get some action on my new video camera but nothing, worth a play around anyway.

The Southerly has picked up and got strong now which is making the cloud tops shear over now, funnily enough i only got an extra 2.5mm from those 3 showers.
The 2pm radar shows those cells in the eastern hills of North Canterbury, MS have upgraded to a moderate risk through there now.

Got 4 rumbles around 1.40pm, all seemed to come from a fairly moderate sized cloud just NE of here, ie probably out towards Motunau way. Had some brief light showers at times during the morning, but nothing out of that cloud.

Southerly has certainly become strong & gusty in central Chch this afternoon, though it's now sunny with no more showers since late morning.

Re: Thundery showers Canterbury 29th January!!
Cycled out to just east of Belfast north of the city, snapped some pics, by that time the wind had picked up and things had fizzled out a bit, as someone mentioned earlier, everything was just getting blown north of town and it turned into a bunch of cumulus fluffies.
Unfortunately for me, the cycle back home was into a frickin gale force headwind, almost blew me off the bike!
Anyways, pics !
.. and here is something I tried hehe, 3d weather !

Re: Thundery showers Canterbury 29th January!!
Obviously 13:30 is a bit late to start a proper t-storm chase in the Canterbury but nevermind, I decided to take my chance out Kirwee/Darfield way as it looked like clouds were torn by the wind on an interesting way. I know it was just my imagination (or was it not ?) but at some stage I thought one cloud was giving funnel-looking tendrils at its base before dissolving ...
There was some good rotation in the clouds around anyway but I don't think it was enough to give anything "real". And at about 14:20 I took this shot of what was happening above Chch. Nothing exceptionnal overall but hey, with no real action so far it was good to be out !

Haha good one Weetbicks are you sure thats not real live webcam of a magnitude 5 plus quake.
Those first 2 you took that was the 3rd and last shower i got, which contained some brief bursts of heavy rain and about 30 minutes later turned into a thundery cell further north.

Re: Thundery showers Canterbury 29th January!!
Well I didn't notice any shaking at the time, however the wind could potentially have masked it, not to mention my wobbly legs from battling the headwind I also made a steriogram out of it but doesn't work quite nice enough, must be too much of a difference in angle of the two pics, oh well, I might try it again next time.

A rather interesting day in the end,not a lot of rain here but if i was any kind of chaser i would have headed 10 km west towards the mountains where all the action was,oh well ..i'll just have to do make do with that for my storm fix,.........I WANT MORE
