Re: General January Weather
Getting a good downpour in the city now, no wind, just coming straight down, very saturating rain - ironic !

Great news, its a wonder there's no thunder, the clouds look tall enough for here to produce it.Weetbicks wrote:Getting a good downpour in the city now, no wind, just coming straight down, very saturating rain - ironic !

Re: General January Weather
Well done, Richard!
A cool damp morning here, 13.8 degrees, 79% humidity, little air movement (can't see any leaves stirring); have had some light rain or drizzle over the last hour or two: don't think it's falling at the moment but it "may as well be", it's so dull & damp-feeling. Very dark, going to turn the light on.

Re: General January Weather
Just had a steady shower here before, some nice looking CB tops out there this morning nothing thundery as yet though.
Wind is a breezy southerly here, MS have a low risk out for this morning so hopefully a good storm develops from it.
Currently 16C at 992hpa .

Re: General January Weather
You can tell the tops are at good heights because the shower cells are very slow moving, just need the day to heat up abit then we might hear some thunder.
I will say though firefrog the showers do seem to be petering out once they get this far north, but still had another one just now and up to 3.6mm in guage.
If storms develope ill make a new topic for us cantabs.

Re: General January Weather
Just been for a port hills rain. Rained the whole way but nothing too dramatic. Looks to be picking up from the south and clearing so good news for the cricket

Re: General January Weather
Looks like the predicted band of showers has been spreading north this morning, rather than afternoon as MetService forecast.

Re: General January Weather
Really big CU off to the NE/N of the city right now. Took some snaps but can't get a full view of it from my house, but it does look very menacing, some well defined edges on it, and looks glaciated @ the top
and on radar, looks like it could be putting down some hail:

I'm going to go head out north of town now and see if I can get some pics. Those ones above were of one already out to sea, I went out the front gate and saw another monster which is actually the one on radar above, back later !

Re: General January Weather
*peers all round the horizon* - can see 'cauliflower clouds' to the far north-east; wind now strong southerly breeze, maybe backing to south-east; no sign of anything unusual in that direction; blue skies with low white clouds coming across from the south, i.e. none going in the opposite direction to the wind on the ground, which is usually a sure indication here of a storm to come. There were some streaky-looking dark grey clouds mid-morning which looked interesting, but nothing eventuated here. 19.1 degrees, 45% humidity. Will keep watching...
