Re: General February Weather
Nice to see you guys up there enjoying a lightning show.
I think something like that in Christchurch would be a disheartening because of the tragic events over the past few days, so i'm not wishing a thunderstorm for the ChCh area for a while.
The NZThS is going on leave for a week and heading into Otago and doing the Rail Trail. Should be fun.
Will put pictures up when I come back.

Re: General February Weather
A cool start here this morning overnight low of 4 degrees. Heading for a fine blue skies day first one for a while after a week of mostly cloudy weather.

Re: General February Weather
Sunny here today; a cool start, 5.2 deg. at 6.30am, now 16.0 deg.
Mostly blue skies with high "mare's tails" moving up from the south and west, also some greyish-brown fluff hanging round to southeast.
Almost no breeze.

I was down in the Waikato last night visiting friends, could see plenty of distant lightning out to the NE after sunset. Took a few snaps on the way down to Hamilton yesterday evening from the car.

Re: General February Weather
Great shots spwill.
Could be another set up for thunderstorms for parts of NZ later in the week with a cold trough over the south and humid air in the north.

Re: General February Weather
A fine day today but a lot cooler than of late for our fine days. Certainly summer is on the way out, although some warmer weather on the way. Luckily the dry trend of the last 3-4 months looks set to continue for the next 7-10 days also.

Re: General February Weather
A beautiful "mackerel sky" here to our west, as regular as a piece of purl knitting.
Moving across the sky pretty briskly.
(We saw the "mares' tails" this morning: is there a forecast for wind?)

Re: General February Weather
Sunshine never really got going here, quite dull with overcast; feels humid (53% at present) salt and sugar going crusty; gentle to moderate south-easterly breeze smelling of the sea at times; currently 23.7 degrees.

Re: General March Weather
I see Feb was Auckland's hottest on record???
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic ... d=10709534
My average temp in Howick was 20.7C, compared to last year 20.8C. Using the max+min average, this year was 21.2C, last year 21.3C. Not the hottest at all here....how strange!

Re: General March Weather
Feb here was 0.8 C warmer than my last 10 year average
I dont see though how it could have beaten 1998
note that article refers to Leigh.....very outskirt of the auckland area

Re: General March Weather
Note that the article says, 'Auckland had its warmest February' based on the average T-max, rather than the average T-mean, for Leigh, which is over 60 km N of downtown Akld. For Akld Aero and Mangere, both the average T-max and the average T-mean in 1998 were considerably warmer than this Feb. Slightly misleading article really.David wrote:I see Feb was Auckland's hottest on record???

Re: General February Weather
One wonders about the Leigh readings, given the winter and spring records combined with this. Not the hottest February for either Auckland city or Nelson sites (overall means).
The Alexandra record is only looking at the current site, back to 1983. A nearby older site in the town recorded far more than 99mm - 137mm in Feb 1945 (a month with some serious flooding in the SI).

Re: General February Weather
The 2010 winter average max of 16.9C at Leigh does look high when you compare it to Whangaparaoa on 15.5C.
