Weather station needed

Unread post by Philip Duncan »

Hi guys,

A retired lady who lives near Te Urewera National Park has contacted me asking about weather stations. She told me she doesn't have much money but wanted to know a good, simple weather station that she might also be able to connect to the internet.

I know very little about weather stations so would be keen to hear from someone on one I could suggest for her (or maybe you have one you no longer want?).

Cheers and thanks!

Hey Phil,

What's her Budget...?

It very much depends on how much $ she wants to spend in relation to data quality.

More $ spent usually means higher accuracy.

Those units may need a bit work to get them going the way you want them too.

So I would exercise caution when buying those.

One Wire stations are quite cheap and can be far more accurate, the only drawback is that you have to wire up the station your self. PC connectivity comes standard :)

Phil, you may want to contact Graeme (Tokww) from the good old Tokoroa as he has some 1 wire stuff and can help point her in the right direction.

Might do that - thanks guys! She has no budget really... I don't know her but I feel like I want to help her out!! I'm sure she won't need anything high tech, something basic that's fairly reliable.

As a long time 1-Wire user myself, I doubt that she would be keen on the 1-Wire System. Undoubtedly it is a highly adaptable platform, but its technicalities appeal mainly to electronics enthusiasts and serious weather watchers. For plug and play out of the box, and PC connectivity, she could go for a Lacrosse unit from Scientific Sales for example. They come with the Heavy Weather software application, which works OK, but is no comparison to Weather Display. I know there are issues with the Lacrosse units (that can be alleviated with replacement cabling etc), but for the general punter, they perform there task adequately. I used a Lacrosse 2310 for 3-4 years before migrating to the 1-Wire System and then on to the Davis VP2+.

I also use a 1-wire station and agree it does need a bit of expertise to set up, but it isn't overly complicated. I managed to set mine up and I am fairly inept when it comes to electronics! :)

Anyway if they do go for a 1-wire set up, I have a spare barometer and power injector for sale (unused), let me know and I sell them at a good price. :)
