Re: Thunder possible west North Island Friday 11th
sea breeze has arrived this far inland, but its weakening already, and there is nothing happening in the auckland area
but the showers over the coromandel might get pushed this direction as the easterly flow develops overnight more?

I see Metservice have a high risk for western Northland tomorrow afternoon/evening, with "a low risk of these thunderstorms becoming slow moving and severe"

Re: General February Weather
Looks like the thunder risk today will be over the central North Island south of Taupo. GFS has moisture there this afternoon and I can see a cb or two popping up especially over those ranges. Looks like the wind patterns will be coverging on the area as well.
Further north I'm doubting any convection up this way or over Northland. Too much of an easterly gradient today for a west coast sea breeze.

Re: Thunder possible west North Island Friday 11th
Looks like another similar situation Today
Dps expected to be a little less but 16°C is good enough for a storm.
Here is a forecasted skew-t today:

Re: Thunder possible North Island - Jan 11/12
DP is nearly 19C here today now....
have had a few passing misty showers even in the easterly
if a sea breeze does develop, could be good
one problem is that the sea temperature is now 22C
so the sea breeze is much later at getting going

Re: Thunder possible North Island - Jan 11/12
I see there are a few heavy showers over Northland currently. Will they get enough heating up there today for a west coast seabreeze ?
Mild cloudy conditions here, mod NE Breeze. 19C Dp.

Re: Thunder possible North Island - Jan 11/12
I see showers have been generating over the hill country during the day to the west of the Bay of Islands, must be some wind convergence through that area, east converging with NE perhaps ?spwill wrote:I see there are a few heavy showers over Northland currently.
Some heating up there now with kerikeri on 25.4C, dewpoint 19C.

Re: Thunder possible North Island - Jan 11/12
Yep, down near Waiouru now. For the records...
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
Issued by MetService at 06:08 pm Saturday 12 February 2011.
Valid until 06:52 pm Saturday 12 February 2011.
This warning affects people in the following local government areas:
RUAPEHU and RANGITIKEI.
At 05:52 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near WAIOURU.
These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the eastnortheast, and are expected to lie near WAIOURU at 06:22 pm and near WAIOURU at 06:52 pm.
These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain.
Very heavy rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.
Very heavy rain associated with this storm has been reported earlier from BAY OF PLENTY AND NEW PLYMOUTH RADARS.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in force for TAIHAPE and TARANAKI.
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management advises that as storms approach you should:
- Take shelter, preferably indoors away from windows;
- Avoid sheltering under trees, if outside;
- Move cars under cover or away from trees;
- Secure any loose objects around your property;
- Check that drains and gutters are clear;
- Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.
During and after the storm, you should also:
- Beware of fallen trees and power lines;
- Avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding.
This warning is due to be updated or lifted by 06:52 pm Saturday 12 February 2011.
