Hoping for thunder in round 2. I think this time it is more favourable. Steamy drizzle conditions cleared around lunchtime to another warm afternoon. Some big Cu hanging around the ranges. Currently 18 degrees here in Westport

A bit surprised at some of the low rain totals today. We've had steady rain most of the day, but was torrential and sustained around 3.30-4.30 pm this afternoon (enough to knock out Sky TV and wireless internet). Sadly I forgot to empty the rain gauge this morning but we currently have 82mm since yesterday morning from this event. Spectacular rain this afternoon, with storm water drains unable to cope with the deluge.

Auckland airport didn't drop below 21C overnight. A misty night.

Todays NI thunderstorm chances have ended up south of us, Taranaki way across to Waiarapa.

Saw lightning flashing away towards towards the Coromandel at 6.45am this morning. Interestingly, no rain of any significance at all here since midnight...

That's using the "set 98% humidity to 100%" setting, since I got one of the flawed humidity sensors :(

The forecasted period of heavy rain (chance thunder) doesnt seem to have arrived here in Westport at the forecast time. Very still and mild outside currently with thick high cloud. No signs of anything interesting at this stage.

Also had a shower in in CHC, I was up watching the cricket and i thought it must have just be isolated to my side of town, maybe nore widespread than firs thought.

Good to few a cbs popping up yesterday afternoon,

Looking forward to seeing a few rays of sunshine this afternoon, gloomy of late, mist and fog last night, warm conditions with dewpoints still around 20C.

We've had torrential rain here in Tawa for the past half hour along with some thunder and lightning. No sign of the rain stopping yet, we've lost sky transmission and I hear the fire engines going off too.

A quick thunderstorm at Tawa, north of Wellington, brought 14 mm between midday and 1 p.m.
Peak rain rate of 92 mm/hr at 12:20 p.m. It bucketed down.
Rain has now eased.

Had some very heavy showers pass through the Manawatu, just before 2PM. I was out chasing them, but never came across any lightning, although looking at the http://webflash.ess.washington.edu/L_pl ... er_map.jpg web page, it looked like there was some in the vicinity.

Seems Like Porirua took a hit from the rain.

Emergency services helped rescue about half a dozen people from their cars this afternoon after heavy rainfall created surface flooding in Porirua.

The downpour, which lasted for about two hours, began shortly after midday and caused blocked stormwater drainpipes to flood.

Porirua Fire Station officer in charge, Dean Wade, told Stuff.co.nz the flooding was particularly bad in the low-lying areas of Porirua and caused many people to be stranded in their cars.

Wade said about eight fire trucks were called out to help people.

"None were life-threatening and in some cases they would have been fine if they had just sat it out until the water subsided so they could drive in the middle of the road."

Wade said one crew had reported seeing at least one car floating in a flooded section of road.

"It's caused a bit of excitement but people have got together and helped each other out."

"I'd encourage people to clear their drains."

Been dark and gloomy all day here but now the sun is coming out and starting to heat a little bit now. Not much rain recorded either tonight only 3.0mm yesterday was 6.3mm. There are some really dark clouds over to Helensville way, maybe some heavy rain there? Was hoping for some thunderstorm this week maybe next time :)

Nice Heavy showers here :)
I like it when you get the waves of precip, stops for a bit and then another band hits suddenly.

Its been a changeable sorta day, rain this morning then cleared as the wind swung around to the NE with some patches of blue sky.
Its just stopped raining again here from an area which moved across from the NW, wind is still NE and its 17C with a 15C dew point.
Looks like some blue to the SW as the front moves up the island, might be something thundery as it gets closer to christchurch soon as the rain band does look heavy.
No 5pm radar but the 2 hour radar is working showing the rain to the north east and cold front coming to the south.
