The wind change came through here about 8.00 and blew like hell for a while but has calmed down in the last half hour, only a mil so far of rain, looking like its another fizzier of a southerly after the last one a few days ago that brought only 3mm.

Looking @ the 9:35 radar, the arse end of the front is literally right over the Rakaia river in a straight line all the way up it, heavy rain and then no rain just like the front of it was. Given its rate of movement, the rain should be over in about 60 to 90 minutes.

Finally got power back on after about 2 hours of being out, not sure why could have been a tree down on lines or an accident as i did hear some sirens.
Southerly sure packed some gale gusts at times not the strongest ive seen but certainly the strongest in awhile, and the best gust front ive seen since about early november last year goes to show how boring the weather has been here of late.
Heavy driving rain with those strong winds too, down to 11.2C now and a much lighter rain and less wind.

John has put some good photos over in the photograph section of last nights gust front.
It turns out there were alot of places without power across the region last night as a result of the gale southerly, Greendale area had power out due to branches through lines and a tree fell onto lines near Prebbleton.
Also a tree was struck by lightning close to shieffield and was set alight, so again much of the lightning activity was inland although there were reports of thunder in Akaroa was there any Tich?
Theres another strong southerly coming up thursday night but wont be as good of a set up.

On a nice day the mornings seem to be nicer than the afternoons, often it clouds over then /and or the wind picks up then.

I posted the above last Friday morning: did the "mare's tails" foretell Sunday evening's southerly storm, does anyone think?

I dont know really,i was away so i never got to see the mare's tails that morning, but i'm sure the upper level winds the cased those cloud to form would have been a fore take of what was to come later.

Lovely day here like most other areas around Canterbury, ended up having a slight Westerly breeze over night that kept it from going below 5C,after about 9.00am the Westerly ended up getting rather strong before dieing out and turning NE for the afternoon with a 24C high.

A very nice day up at Tekapo today Blue dome skies all day with a light northerly wind. There was a light frost at Burkes pass township but nothing on the other side of the pass as there was a light breeze blowing. Started out fine here with ice on on the car first thing got down to 1.9 degrees. Cloudy now with a fresh southerly change and 15 degrees.

Very nice sunset due to ex-tc Bune's High cloud :)

Here are some shots of it and some shots of the heavy showers/convection Hamilton got on the 27th.

Didn't see any lightning, and wind was so strong it would've drowned out any thunder.

Glorious day in Mayfield and Ashburton: clear blue skies, pleasantly warm; autumn tints just beginning to show on cherry trees, maples, beech, oak etc. Many "horse-mushrooms" popping up in the grass.
Currently 18.5 degrees here.

Here's NIWA's preliminary March 2011 Climate Summary.

Temps near average in most regions due to the contrast between prevailing warm NE winds and an extreme cold outbreak on the 6th.

Very wet for almost all of the North Island and most of Otago. Main centres, Auckland and Hamilton recorded over twice their normal March rainfall. Whitianga recorded the month's highest 1-day rainfall of 159mm on the 21st.

Apart from Northland and N Otago, sunshine mostly above normal, particularly for the South Island's West Coast where Greymouth recorded its highest total in 64 years of records.
