General April Weather

Unread post by spwill »

Looks like a High moving into the Tasman next week will deliver some cool/cold weather to NZ, possible rain/showers for many area's early week with a low forming near NZ.

Yer :-k doesn't seem to make bugger all difference around here if its either La Niña or El Niño,summers are dry and the wet weather often arrives April-May regardless

I see the SAM has moved into a negative phase which tends to encourage more westerly flow onto NZ rather than NE.

Will April be unsettled ?

Looks like a wet and changeable week ahead next week with some cold blasts, this will see some good dustings of snow down lowish levels which isnt un heard of for early April.
This time of the year also brings the potential of seasonal thunderstorms, and it seems there could be a few chances next week Thursday especially.

Had a cool low of 4.7°C this morning, mostly sunny with various high cloud throughout the day :)

The cold upper air next week looks good but will SFC temps be good enough?

First day of autumn in my book. Auckland's average daily temperature range for April is 13C to 20C. Thats a bit milder than our November numbers.

For me here, March will end up being about average for temperature (was at times running both below and above average during the month)
Rain way up on average!

Sea temps are warm, see where the cold air tracks , certainly looks very cold over the NorthIsland given the time of year if it eventuates.

looks like a spell of southerly rain for eastern NZ at this stage.

Would be nice if thats the case Jase after a summer of bugger all convection.

Todays front brought some nice rain which missed many other areas around Canterbury, had 8mm which not a lot but its the best fall around here for ages

Aucklands April started warm, up to 23C, increasing cloud through the day with light evening showers.

Nothing much here from today's front.
Regarding convection this summer, most of it occured underground, which didnt do much favour for many residents of Christchurch, sadly.
Maybe, we could blame La Nina on the Canterbury/Christchruch Earthquakes :-S :-s

This is the first sounding that is decent!

Does look garbage and should only be a brief affair for here looking at the models,MS have three days of RAIN in the rural forecast......yer right, three days if there was a stationery low just to the east but that's not what the models are showing.

Yes interesting to see that storm. Yesterdays cold front has stalled in the eastern BOP and is now forecast to drift westward toward Coromandel.

I see what you mean
getting a few strikes recorded myself here from that CB

when it went over here late yest afternoon we had brief heavy rain and clouds on the hill tops, so alot of moisture and cooler air with that front....so I guess as it passed over the warm waters of the BOP it fired up a bit?
