No doubt again down the east coast with straight easterlies then SW.I reckon the whole autumn will be this pattern with the odd anticyclone between.

I would be changing the forecast so 'showers, some heavy' for CHCH going by the current radar.

Metservice has Westport on 26C and 14% humidity! An extreme case of foehn SE?

up to 27.5C now over at Westport! thats gotta be a record of sorts, can't imagine they get that high in April that often?

Definitely down to a foehn wind, probably helped by the fact there isn't much snow on the alps too I'd say.

If that temperture is correct that will be the second hottest april temperture recorded in westport. Hottest temperture ever recorded at Westport in april that I can find on cliflo is 28.2 degrees in 1938.

Looks like the Westport temperture was a metservice error. Weatherwatch have the high in Westport as 16 degrees.

The airmass over the SouthIsland is cold, will be 17C at best.
A cold day down here in Otago today, mostly clear skies with a good frost this morning in Arrowtown.

Saw this towering Cu ( pyrocumulus) over a burn off near Dunedin today.

Here's NIWA's preliminary April 2011 Climate Summary.

Overall April was 0.4C below normal. The highest national temp was 28.4C at Westport (another local record) and the lowest temp was -5.9C at Ranfurly. Both Hanmer and Queenstown apparently recorded their lowest ever April temps in more than 100 years of records, with -5.2C and -4.5C respectively.

Of the 6 main centres, Tauranga was by far the wettest, but also the sunniest, even though it was a little cloudier than normal.

Tekapo's 212 hours would be well ahead of the rest last month.

Yes having spent quite a lot of time at Tekapo last month I can definitly say it was very sunny. Went nearly a whole week without a cloud in the sky. wouldnt have been as much sun this side of Burkes pass but overall it was quite sunny here also mainly due to the lack of high cloud and that the last week of the month was practicly cloudless.

Surprised to see South Canterbuy had above normal rainfall. Only had 47mm here which is about normal

Interesting that NIWA seem to think the 28.4C at Westport on the 26th was legit? At the time I thought it might have been real but looking back the SE foehn would have struggled to get it that high as the air on the other side of the alps was too cold and dry, surely?? Also for such an extreme temp to occur there would have been other warm maxs nearby but the rest of them weren't anywhere near that high. 0_o
