Snow for the high country.

Good morning to all. After a chilly night we awoke this morning to find quite a bit of snow on the tops around Twizel. My suspicion is that we're in for a major winter this year.

What level is the snow down to Twizel Dave? Was talking to someone at Tekapo this morning who said there was heavy northwest rain. Snow should lower down to 800-900m later today so the Lindis pass may get a few snow showers but im guessing the ground will be to warm for it to settle.

Hello! It looks as if the snow is around the 1,000 metre mark or thereabouts.

Hello! Rather more snow on the mountains this morning. The Southern Alps and other ranges look very fetching I must say.

Hello John! Most people in the high country would certainly agree with you about that. The sun has been shining since Monday morning yet there is still some snow lingering about the mountains and bigger hills.

Yes its getting to that time of year when the snow starts to stick on the mountains for a bit. Still quite a bit of snow above 1400m here but it will melt within the next few days. The last lot of snow we had on the hills in early march was gone within a day. Permenet snow on the mountains doesnt normally arrive untill May although in april 2009 heavy snow fell down to 400m and stayed on the mountains above 1700m for the rest of the season.

There's not a lot on the maintains close to here but looking north today at the hills north of Waiau there's heaps that fell from last night front, but as snowstormwatcher pointed out it often wont stay about this time of year, only takes a day of warm NW to disappear.
