Yes it's not strong here at all, not even SW in fact. Average 250° bearing. Showers have eased significantly since last night.

Amazing lightning flash at about 0958 hrs
I watched it from Hepburn substation, looking direction Glendene.
Todays job cancelled for the painters.
Also some good heavy rain and some hail. That front didn't last long
Now monitoring weather from Sunset Rd
Who put the LED's on the lightning arrestor ?

I saw the lightning bolt from that David and got thunder a couple of seconds later. I was at Panmure.
Had big gusts and heavy rain.

The upper air was not unduly cold over Auckland today, 500mb -19C, so why the thunder? I think the jet stream over Auckland provided additional lift which allowed the weak storms to develop.

yup, as soon as you got to the top of the hill just north of Taihape
eveything was white
but it was raining there, while we were there (bordering on sleet), so it was not going to last long

I was pleased with our timing getting the snow shower at the top of the desert road that we got :)

Hmm, using local knowledge (I lived in Taihape at one point) I'm picking that hill was probably the Turangarere Hill Deviation where it climbs from around 500m to 700m

Automatic recorded 200 degrees 29 gusting 45 knots at 3pm while ATCs metar (reported a few minutes earlier) was 220 degrees 32 gusting 45 knots. The peak gust recorded by the aerodrome automatic was 49 knots in the hour to midday.

I got 53 knot max gust (and around that 33 knot 10 minute average) just before 11am yesterday, so that tallies with the Airport nicely
looking at my graph data :)
what was the max speed recorded at the Manukau Heads yesterday?

I thought I heard a report of 170kmh from the Manukau heads
wow!
that must have been some squall then!
it was WSW in the morning, which does funnel nicely in the heads and there is a big up slope acceleration over the top of the hill with any westerly in the direction!
90kts is the highest speed the heads have had for some years
