Short sharp cold spell. 17-18th april
Looks like might be the first snow around the lower areas of the south with snow forecast to 400m in the south rising to 500m in mid canterbury and so on. doesnt seem to have much precip but good to see we are getting southerlies as we got abit ripped off last winter with hardly any real good southerlys.

We've already had snow down here on the mountains for the last month or so

But where do you draw the line when the term "first snow" is used, after all the higher mountains get snow year round,so is "first snow" when it falls below a certain level or is it the first permanent snow for the winter

First snow down to or below alpine areas (ie bushline) is how I'd define it. (that probably would've been the cold outbreak of early March this year)

Today quite easily could have had another 20-25mm from heavy chain showers, although most of them remained offshore or bypassed. Some further showers have developed and moving in and around the city at present- squally. Been a very strong cold sw at times today. May get the off heavier shower over the next hour or two before the clearance and the winds start to die off.

Great new controllable timelapse webcam - shows how cold it must've been in Hanmer today, with snow only slowly melting. (certinly lower than forecast)

Had a good hail storm between 7:30am & 8:00am this morning. I was in bed sleeping & then all of a sudden there was this loud roaring sound from the hail & the strong southerly wind that came with it & had to get up quickly to see what was happening. I have never seen anything like that before where I live (in the Marlborough Sounds).

Very nice there cameron, winter is well and truly here now with those bitter winds and a good dumping of snow on the mountains down to just below the 400m mark.
Showers this morning some heavy with hail mixed in for a time, cleared and was nice to have the sunshine but showers have since returned in the last few hours.
Up to 25mm since 6pm thursday night in the gauge.

Yea its certainly had more punch than i thought. Was very cold and the snow Level much lower in the north than what any Weather agency had predicted. They had sleet for top of desert rd. Not snow in Waiouru at 800msl. Top of the desert road which is around 1000-1100 msl mark.

No snow visible on BP tops late this afternoon, but probably would've been early this morning. Temps down from 9-10C at lower levels to 6C at Hilltop. Still showery out near Akaroa this evening.

Re: Short sharp cold spell. 17-18th april
Looks like the snow got even lower in the central plateau than first thought with a inch falling in taihape. If this is the metservice predicts. We could be in for a bumpy Winter. I have to say its always good when they get it wrong would be boring if it always happened to what they said it was going to do.
. Might i add taihape is quite lol like around 500msl
