Last year in May I had an average temp of 11.9°C, this year in May I have an average of 13.7°C.
Thats a difference of 1.8°C.

Interestingly the Lowest Temp last in year in May here was 0.3°C, this year its 1.3°C.

Interesting to see how La Nina has impacted our temps with the warm air being pulled in from the tropics.

Beautiful pre-dawn skies just lately, with the planets and the old Moon against the pale scarlet of the coming sunrise.

May going to be 1.5C above normal here too
but its the south island that is much more above normal that is going to make it a record for all of NZ
(and I see that the may record has broken a few times before already in the last 10 years)

Another stunning day here again with no wind and no clouds. Warming up very nicely. Currently 13 but feels more like 18ish. Think we will pass the 15 degree forecast high

Auckland had its turn earlier in May when its sun was far ahead of many places further south. It's our turn now. Anticyclone in current form will be gone in a few days anyway, with SE likely here and highest pressures further south.

'May was warmest on record - Niwa' - Stuff
Last updated 12:33 31/05/2011

...Data from climate agency Niwa shows the month was almost 2.5 degrees Celcius warmer than usual, with rainfall double normal levels. The figures won't be official until tomorrow morning, but principal climate scientists James Renwick said the provisional numbers were extraordinary. "Two-point-five degrees doesn't sound like much, but for the average over the whole month that's huge," Renwick said. "Normally 0.5 of a degree is a record-breaker." The average monthly temperature had been 13.1C, a temperature normally expected for April, Renwick said. The previous hottest May, recorded in 2007, had a mean temperature of 12.4C.
'Warmest May since records began' - ONE News
Published: 9:31AM Tuesday May 31

...[NIWA climate scientist Georgina Griffiths] said La Ninas occur every two or three years, and once every 20 or 30 years there's a particularly strong system. "But we don't break records every 20 or 30 years like we have now - we've just displaced the previous warmest May which was 2007, prior to that 1999. So in the last 10 years we've had three record-breaking warm Mays."
That last statement's not quite correct; although 2007 was the previous warmest May nationally (being 1.7C above normal), May, 1962 (1.6C above normal) was warmer than May, 1999 (1.5C above normal).

NIWA's Mangere site looks like it will be about 1.9C above normal.

Here's NIWA's 'May 2011 Climate Summary'.

40 May mean-temp records broken and 11 daily max-temp records broken (incl. Akld Aero).

Some of the wording is rather careless - "Very cloudy for the South Island and southwest of the North Island" - in fact normal sunshine for both Dunedin and Wellington. The 6 main centre remark says "except for Christchurch, a very wet month" - only Auckland and Tauranga were well above normal rainfall.

The Nelson Aero rainfall is a new record, but of interest is that the older town site (which had a somewhat higher mean) had a much bigger total of 386mm in May 1877.

Interesting, the official figure is 180mm for Auckland, most PWS's recorded less than that - I recorded 124mm in Howick, not really much above normal.

156mm here. ;-) Shame NIWA had to close their more central Owairaka site. :(

Here's a few other Akld region May totals c/o NIWA...

139mm - Whangaparaoa
167mm - Albany
163mm - Khyber Pass
150mm - Auckland Aero

Andy may have a view on this - the sun total for Cromwell was exceptionally low in May - just 59 hours. Alex. was also well below average with 98, but normally Cromwell is ahead of it. The numbers I saw showed the last 4 or 5 days were quite sunny in Alex but much less so in Cromwell. Was the incidence of fog or low cloud unusually high there in May?
