Have just heard of this. Sounds intense. From TV3 website:

Reports are coming in of a tornado on the North Shore.

The tornado is said to have picked up cars and at least one person has been killed.

There are reports the roof of Albany Mega Centre has collapsed and people have been evacuated from the building.

Police have confirmed there are injuries from the tornado.

A witness has described a body - believed to be dead - in the carpark of the shopping mall, outside Place Makers.

Several fire units are currently on there way to the Mega Centre.

People have already started tweeting about the tornado and the damage it has caused.

"Albany mall has been evacuated. Im shaking so bad. Roof collapsed. I thought i was gonna die," said Lucy Zhao.

It is heading towards the city and there have been injuries and at least one fatality.

surprised M/S did not have at least a watch on these shower lines going through
it was an hour prior that I posted that a second line was bearing down on the auckland area, so it not like they did not have time to get a thunderstorm watch out on that line?
they had updated to a high risk for the auckland area though

Must be F2 with that level of damage surely?? (NZstorm, you'll know) .....crazy.

That second video that shows the debris is unreal....you kinda expect Reed to pop out of the dominator yelling "MY GOD ITS HUUUGE"

Sorry to hear about the fatalities...thats rank :?: Dont think NZ has anything about tornado's in the building codes??

At least the media can't call this a 'mini' tornado this time...this is the real thing

Doesn't look like the typical Land spout variety we normally have. Lets hope metservice do a decent job covering this one and report back its rating on strength.

Significant amount of debris has made its way down to Auckland Airport, runway closed whilst debris is removed. Mostly twigs/leaves but some sheets of plastic.

Metservice now with severe thunderstorm watch.

"Further thunderstorms are likely about eastern parts of Auckland down to northern Waikato, Coromandel and western Bay of Plenty over the next 4 hours. Some of these thunderstorms could be severe and with a continued risk of one or two damaging tornadoes. Should severe weather approach or if you feel threatened, take shelter immediately."

"Just so everyone is clear - the Placemakers building was being dismantled and had no walls and 1/2 a roof BEFORE the #Tornado"

So a couple of those photos out there showing a gutted building arnt quite what they seem.
