Re: Active front, North Island 15th May
I thought it was a mini tornado actually! Was fairly wild when it hit here too, definitely a severe thunderstorm responsible as there was quite a distinct drop and then rise in the pressure as it passed over suggesting good inflow and outflow characteristics. Nice and frequent lightning from it too with a strike every 30 seconds or so for a good 10 minutes or so.Manukau heads obs wrote:looks like a small /weak tornado in the Nelson area early this morning:

By the way, is Nelson now in the North Island?
Graph from last 12 hours, clearly shows the storm coming over around 2:30-2:45am and also the Southerly change coming through on midday:

Re: Active front, North Island 15th May
this next line is looking more organised as it approaches the coast line
one or two strikes on it I have picked up
might get a bit more active yet...

Got dark in the last 40mins here in Invercargill, went from a fairly ordinary day to a darkish sky quick.

Re: Active front, North Island 15th May
That's the biggest 'dud' for a while, barely any activity on the Grey Lynn tracker for most of the afternoon from what I could see. Just one heavy shower here today, otherwise not too bad a day...

One heavy shower for a few minutes and that was it. No lightning at all, not much wind either.
Re: Active front, North Island 15th May
Same here one massive downpour that caused our sky and wireless internet to go down and gutters to overflow but thats all nothing special, was hoping for some lightning!

Yup, I highly doubt there will be any t-storms now. The trough isnt even showing any CB's on it.
So I would say the risk is low now....

Re: Active front, North Island 15th May
Alarm-bells usually go off whenever the media reports, 'trampoline v. power-lines = mini-tornado'. However, a tornado(s) does sound feasible, although downbursts or strong gusts also spring to mind.Tim S wrote:I thought it was a mini tornado actually! 'Gales, rain - now an icy blast' - NZ Herald

...Mini-tornadoes also struck in the Wellington region and on the Kapiti Coast. One felled 30m trees on six properties. Waikanae resident Nigel Griffith said the brief blast of wind caused "a hell of a mess". A large pine tree fell on one of his company trucks, causing about $10,000 worth of damage. "I was surprised at the damage. It bounced off the back, stoving the roof in, pushing the doors out and bouncing the windscreen out. "Our horses were badly affected by the wind, galloping around, so I had to let them out. And next door, it took down two huge macrocarpa."

Re: Active front, North Island 15th May
Calling any weather event a tornado is just the flavor of the month for the media, its not like they will be accountable for making stuff up like that. Although calling the Nelson tornado a tornado looks accurate.

Re: Active front, North Island 15th May
I think the media is just trying to sell their story by using the recent Albany tornado and saying that some strong winds are tornadoes to increase their reader count.
