Canterbury Earthquakes

For all things relating to tectonic plate collisions. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis... the Pacific ring of fire and world-wide. Please create new threads for stronger earthquakes when they happen above magnitude 5.0.

This kind of thing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hum
The description of it as sounding like a 'distant idling diesel engine' is perfect. I've noticed it half a dozen times over the last two years.
I happen to be among those who have heard the 'rustling silk' sounds associated with an aurora, so *shrugs* who knows?

I know what you mean, sounds like an iddling truck quietly sitting next to your house except theres the pressure in your ears that changes with it.
No actual shake but its recognised enough to know its seismic related and not a nearby vehicle or plane as im used to these sounds being in a flight path and all, but perhaps in the 1.8-2.8 magnitude range.
Weve had a few local 2.9-3.3 shakes and although they are small they make alot of noise and rattle the house somewhat.
I think we are easing up from the shakes which is nice but i think there will still be times over the next 10 years when a 5 plus will hit again forming a small reaction of further 3-4 mags for awhile then settle again.
Most regions generally seem to do this over quite some time after a big shake series, especially more so for a region that really hasnt had so many earthquakes over a short period of time and over 6 magnitude.

There was actually a 4.7 magnitude about 60km east of Christchurch a few Saturdays ago i think it was the 18th, 33km deep but still fairly close to the bay.
It was listed on the NZ quake map site, didnt feel it myself though last one i felt was about 2 weeks ago.

That was this one http://geonet.org.nz/quakes/2012p673624
Initial estimates had it further north and larger at 4.2

Geo Net has recently just updated thier website and they are having trouble getting the initial preliminary details right, i was surprised when it showed up on my facebook feed as 4.0 near oxford i thought hang on i didnt feel a thing.
But when i had a look at the drums i could see it was much smaller then that, and so it was then down graded correctly to 3.2 QEll area.

This is an interesting article posted the other day.

Yes, Jason, I read that article about Canterbury still creeping around. Interesting, alright.

It looks like the Montalto Fault may have given another shrug:

Canterbury Quake Live

Shes off again was sitting down having lunch and had a moderate shake more long wobbling than anything, followed 40 minutes later by another smaller one.
4.3 10km NE of Kaiapoi at 1:35pm
3.6 10km East of Spencerville at 2:01pm

Im hoping we are not building again its been very quiet the past few months, although there have been alot of 2's and low 3's across the region since i felt a small 3.4 on Tuesday night and yesterday there was a 3.7 up at Darfeild.

A bit of a rumbly wobble and quiver at 10:45pm this evening (3.9M @ 6 odd kms near Springston) but nothing really substantial here apart from as it was the first felt earthquake felt since the ones in July. Never felt the one on Friday?

Less than 1% now for a biggie
There is less than a one in a hundred chance of a magnitude-7.0 or higher earthquake hitting Canterbury in the next year, latest forecasts show.

GNS Science has released its latest quake forecasts for the Canterbury aftershock region, which show the probability of significant aftershocks have steadily declined since January.

In the year to October 9, 2013, there is less than a 1 per cent probability of a magnitude-7.0 quake or higher. This is down from a 1 per cent probability forecast last month.

There is a 3 per cent probability of a magnitude-6.5 to 6.9 aftershock, which is unchanged from August. This is down from a predicted 4 per cent probability last January.

There is a 9 per cent probability of a magnitude-6.0 to 6.4 aftershock, which is unchanged from September and down from 13 per cent in January.

There is a 30 per cent probability of a magnitude-5.5 to 5.9 aftershock, down 1 per cent from August. This is down from a predicted 39 per cent in January.

There is a 71 per cent probability of a magnitude-5.0 to 5.4 aftershock, compared with 72 per cent in August and 82 per cent in January.

GNS Science, which reviews its quake forecasts every month, noted that the calculations were for the entire aftershock zone and not just Christchurch

Nice wee thump here at 2136hrs. Woke the cat up
Edit: I see they can't make their mind where it was, 3 locations so far around here and alteration of depth and magnatude. :-s

Choose the "All" option on the bar along the top instead of "Felt". It's also easier if you set the Region to just Canterbury.

Doing that takes you here: http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/region/canterbury/all

To end the year off, we have had 2 significant rumbles plus a bit of a shake at the end, today and yesterday.
Only 3 odd on the Richter Scale but something significant to mention here. :-k
