Significant earthquake off the coast of New Brighton today at around 1:15pm.
Didn't notice it in Rolleston where I was when it happened.
It was just when I saw people rushing outside of Henrys when I was standing on the footpath.

I really feel for those in Christchurch.
Glass cabinet-doors rattled here and I've straightened a few pictures on the wall.

Been a considerable amounts of aftershock from this. Nothing felt here though.
Seems to all be located around the New Brighton area.
Must of been some sort of undersea rock slidance 15kms under the sea :-k
I wonder if there was any big waves along the beach from this?

Yes, but it depends on where you are.
Here, it was slightly noticeable as I was in front of the computer and thought, Hey that's an earthquake but if I was outside or even walking around, I probably wouldn't of noticed it.

Depends how you look at it, not a single call to emergency services indicate to me it wasnt severe.

Caused a few issues in Lyttelton and Heatcote where peak ground acceleration toped 0.29g, well above the .20g that triggers inspection of buildings. Acceleration data tailed off quickly away from the Port Hills where shaking was strong to severe

The epicentre was near the tragic 2011 earthquake of Feb 22nd, so any earthquake shaking around that area would be more excessive by the presence of volcanic rock.

I expect it was this effort:

https://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/2024p388325

Mag. 2.7 at 4:19am this morning, 10 km south-west of Christchurch, 9km deep, that caused all my pictures to go skewiff on the walls and one little ornament to fall over earlier today.

I may have woken, not sure; I have submitted a report but mine often don't show up for some reason.

Would be hard to feel an earthquake at such magnitude i would imagine, and i would imagine the distance is too far as well.

Beg to differ. Within 1km of our place, was enough to rattle the house and wake us up

Was a few light earthquakes today, most recent 25 minutes ago with a magnitude of 3.0, there was a 3.5 about an hour or so ago and a 3.4 8 hours ago, didn’t feel them myself but they were all based around SW christchurch (while im more east/northeast)

Pictures on walls need straightening again, and the little ornament has fallen over...
Nothing else observed though.

Defintely been a number of moderate shakes for us in Halswell. All centered in Prebbleton. 3 felt and several other smaller ones on the drums, latest a 3.0 earlier today
