Looking at the radar the Front looks very nice but it degrading each time it comes closer to NZ:

I wonder if I will hear thunder today?

The lightning activity has weakened off but still a decent line of cb there.

GFS has the precip crossing Auckland mid to morning with lifted index of -2.

yes, I am picking up strikes from the front
sure looks like an active front on the rain radar and sat picture :)

I don't think the front is that active, if there was good forcing there would be a lot of lightning given the unstable air.

Overcast with temp 14C and dp 14C. Light NE.

Seems this first band is weakening quite a lot as it makes landfall

Yes, I notice on the IR the tops have subsided on what they were 2 hrs ago.

why does that happen so often? active fronts like these seem to lose their oomph just as they near the northland coast, just about every time.

one problem might be that is there is overnight cold air over the land mass that has not been heated up yet
ahead of the front
that might be one problem
if it arrived in the afternoon instead then it might have been a different story

still looking black just off the coast line here though!
