I love how excited people get over radar.

Some good points here, though there are other reasons for the data paucity, and the use of composite reflectivity for public domain data...

The general public is not even aware of them beyond the nightly TV1 weather forecast, and probably wouldn't give a toss. :)
I would have to disagree, it seems that every time there is a significant rain event happening some or all of the metservice site crashes. That isn't just from us guys having a look. ;)

what annoys me is that we dont even get the opportunity to pay a reasonable "retail" price to access the radar. here I am offering to pay, and yet they dont offer a service.

Have spoken to Met Service yet again for the fourth time , I have an open booking re this fault , they indicate they have located a problem with one of their servers and hope fingers crossed to have the problem fixed tomorrow .Considering this problem has been hanging around for at least 10 days

Just happened to Google this post up. I was talking to a Metservice technician earlier this week when he popped into work to deal with an issue, he said they begin the installation on the Hokitika radar next week. If I remember correctly from work, weather balloons at Hoki end around July next year, this gives a 6-month transition period to compare the balloon data to what they will get from the radar for doppler winds.

interesting... how long did instalation take for the BOP and Mahia radars? About 3 months from start to finish (on the internet) if my memory is correct.

Cant wait to see the echos from the west coast. It should help with the upper South Island too should it not? Would hate to think it will only do a small strip of narrow coast.

I think the M/S should be making the auckland rain radar 7 min update at the moment due to the gas pipeline problem and farmers having to spray milk onto pastures...knowing where rain is will help them in getting it on when its about to rain, to get it washed off the pasture, but to not put it on if there is going to be too much rain and it would run off into the streams.....
:)

I agree.
They should cancel the high resolution for the Canterbury radar now as we are not getting the earthquakes as much now?

Im really puzzled by that comment John, have you started on the Beers or Absinthe too early?, LOL

Why would you want M/S to cancel your high-res radar Images? the logic doesn't make sense.....
