Clear skies and 4.6C here earlier, 4C at Akld Aero and I think Ricky's 3.1C was his lowest for the year.

'Temperature plummets but sun here to stay' - Stuff
Last updated 07:47 18/07/2011 - Stuff

Aucklanders last night shivered under the coldest night of the winter so far with the mercury dropping to a chilly 2.2 degrees. That temperature was recorded at Whenuapai at 4am, while it was 4 degrees at the Auckland Airport at 7am. The Whenuapai recording is five degrees below Auckland's mean July minimum of 7.2 degrees, but is still some way off the record July low for Auckland of -3.9 degrees, recorded at the airport in 1965.

Heavy fog blanketed some western and northern parts of the city this morning, but flights at Auckland Airport did not seem to be affected. ...
Huh? :?: Whenuapai Aero and Ardmore Aero often record the lowest temps around Akld.

According to MetService's website, Whenuapai recorded 0.9C and 1.7C on the first 2 days of this month (Whenuapai's lowest ever July temp was -4.2 in 1950 and lowest ever, -4.9C in June, 1951). Ardmore also recorded lower temps at the end of June, including 0.9C on the 27nd, while Akld Aero recorded 3.4C on the same day.

Update: Whenuapai's lowest temp last night was actually 1.5C. Its July 30-year-average T-min is 5.9C.

Some wintry weather showing up for the SouthIsland this weekend, ECMWF suggests a cold trough to move through Sunday at this stage, snow on the hills.

A very pleasant sunny calm 15C here currently.

8.0 degrees here at present and getting chilly as a south-east breeze sneaks in from the coast; there is a line of murky cloud on the horizon and a smell of damp borne on the wind, even though it's still sunny for now.

Its a mystery, just like that 11.1C max they quoted for Auckland around Thursday or so...when it reached 14-15 that day

Yes - that was dew. There's no way I can think of detect if its rain or dew unfortunately, and this happens quite often on clear winter nights.

I may add something to my site that mentions possible dew in the gauge when the daily total is 0.2 mm.

That is a main reason why I consider rain-day counts mean little unless the threshhold is higher - say 0.5mm. My preference is the so-called "wet day" count, using 1.0mm.

I have the same thing. On a good frost i can get 0.6mm fall through and it comes through as "snow" because the sun is melting the ice on the bucket but the temp is still around 0

you can set WD to ignore the first rain tip of the day, assuming its dew (prior to 9am or so, and is based on dew forming conditions being present)

This cold blast looks to bring some dry cold air up this way, we might possibly get a frost this winter after all? GFS showing a high of 10 on Monday and dew points falling to 0 at night...

This household today picked the first wild-plum blossom for the season. Often done at this time of year, irrespective of past weather or that to come. :-w
