Yeah, does seem unlikely.jamie.haultain wrote:Metservice going for -6 in Taumaranui on Saturday. Seems a bit cold doesnt it? i know they get bloody cold there but no one else around the country is in their forecast to be even close to that cold.
Taumarunui has only been around -6C seven times over the last 64 years (-6.1C being the lowest).
Edit: Oops, the figures above are from a station monitored by NIWA and appear to be synoptic based only. MetService's three-and-half year old AWS on the other hand recorded near -6C temps 3 times in June, 2009 and 3 consecutive morns of -5.5C, -6.3C and -6.8C in July last year.

Fine weather forecast tomorrow now too

Yes. We have missed all the weather that other parts of the country have had, well except for that thunderstorm over BP on Tuesday.
Fine, frosty weather coming up.

Says the temperature in Auckland only reached 11C yesterday? Where did they get that figure from?

Re: Unstable squally western NZ 11-15th July
What we need is a low to develop over northern NZ with a cold flow/anticyclone behind. At least next week looks better with easterlies though the NW flow was OK and had lightning.

Re: Unstable squally western NZ 11-15th July
Not from MS obviously - they had 15C for Akld Aero, Whenuapai and Ardmore, and 14C for Whangaparaoa. Last time Akld Aero had a T-max that low or lower was in July, 2009.David wrote: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic ... d=10738593

Re: General July Weather
Seems Metservice thinks this incoming high won't be that frosty, they don't even have Hamilton getting into the negatives or Auckland getting under 5 Sounds wrong to me!

we had a clap of thunder at 2:15 with a shower that passed through and looked intense as it hit the coaset line but it then weakened

Re: General July Weather
Been an absolute corker of a day on the coast here.. somebody was kind enough to turn the sun on, and a little bit of warmth to go with it! Not a cloud in the sky & next to zero wind so took the opportunity to go for a ride & take some photos of yesterdays snowdump on the ranges here.. (hey, snow is a novelty for me )

Re: General July Weather
A few small showers about this morning with the odd graupel pellet frozen to the windowscreen this morning, was possibly about 0C when this fell so if we had more decent showers we may have had some snow.
Most of the showers today have stayed offshore clipping the penninsula at times, but tomorrow we might see some showers maybe some hail and sleet as the flow goes more S-SW than W-SW.
Southern Alps and lower foothills look nice with thick snow covering them, down to around 400-500m i would say.

Re: General July Weather
yes, was just reading about them on wikipedia, they are surface skimming feeders
so if it was blowing 50 knots and mountainous seas with driving foam, they would struggle to get enough food I would say

Re: General July Weather
almost like day light out there with the full moon. Just went for a walk to check on the cows and once my eyes adjusted it was like dusk. Can see everything as a silouette (spelling?)all the way to the mountain ranges
