Just had a brief but insanely heavy shower here! Sort of convective in nature - huge rain drops spaced close together and comes in waves.

I see a snow set up for Canterbury but being over a week away I would disregard it at the moment. :-)

Showers completely cleared after midnight here, although the MS 3-day rain model is showing it will get quite wet today. I'm starting to look forward to that anticyclone ;)

The weather gods are certainly shining on Christchruch which is a great relief post quake. Apart from the frosty nights ahead we have escaped this weather system almost completely unscathed, best place in NZ to be in the past couple of weeks.

Fine weather forecast tomorrow now too

A glittery orange sunrise followed early rain here this morning. Has been sunny and clear till now, some cloud coming from south and west. Hail at Ruapuna this morning, also hail had drifted over road at Lismore; at 10.30am was still hazardous driving there, several hours (I presume) after it had fallen.

Its turned out to be a beaut of a day here today. Got to 10 degrees with no wind to speak of and glorius sunshine. Little nippy in the shade as you would expect at this time of year but the sun gave some nice heat.

Im excited at how bad this flooding is going to get here. I think it has the potential to rival Feb 03 or 04. I forget which one it was. That was the worst flooding we have seen since 23 years of being here. Drains are inundating paddocks now but rain is still falling and i took the dog for a run and the ammount of water still yet to flow off the paddocks is staggering.

Expecting to wake up to a lake around the house. Really feel sorry for the cows calving in this though. Being put on concrete or mud for all but a few hours each day for the past 10 days. Poor things are shattered.

Such a large and long lasting system and weve had hardly anything interesting from it, just 7mm here over the past week and fresh to strong gusty winds not even gale force.
Tomorrow hasnt come to much now, will possibly be the odd wintry shower overnight but not much.
Bring on the next system and El Nino for some interesting weather :banghead:

Seems the subtropical low is now plotted way east of NZ on the GFS just through.

ECMWF also showing the low well east of us now and a 1040hpa on the horizon..
