Re: General July Weather
Looks like thunderstorms will approach the west of the North Island tomorrow pm but the system will be weakening. Looks to be a good chance for the west of Waikato in the early evening however. Will see how this looks tomorrow.

Re: General July Weather
Typical Auckland winter day, clouds over after a night of top to bottom condensation,at least when I lived in Waganui it meant a good frost and clear day,not showers on and off.

Re: General July Weather
No sunshine measurement at Wanganui since the 1990s. While pre-1950s records suggest it was a bit sunnier than Auckland, nothing since then supports that case. An EWS instrument will probably be installed there in the near future. Perhaps the results might look different then.Michael wrote:Typical Auckland winter day, clouds over after a night of top to bottom condensation,at least when I lived in Waganui it meant a good frost and clear day,not showers on and off.

Re: General July Weather
There's never been a shortage of stations - rainfall from 1890. Currently there are 2 AWSs and one EWS noted at CliFlo, but sunshine measurements ceased in 1995. I suspect the later records were compromised somewhat by deterioration at the site (vegetation or new/larger obstacles).Michael wrote:There used to be a station at cooks gardens, can remember it the black aneometre spinning round many moons ago.

Re: General July Weather
ps, re that waipu tornado, we eneded up staying at waipu cove over the weekend (got some good surf in)
just a few km on from where the tornado came in
those houses on the other side of the road were lucky to have missed it!
ps, the photo associated with it could not actually been it?
Spwill, did you find any other damage trail further inland?

Re: General July Weather
Went and visited a house not far from here that had a big norfolk pine struck by lightning at around 5am ish
not sure if it was monday or sunday morning just gone
the path blew off the bark in a spiral pattern down the tree
and blew out 16 window panes on the house (outwards too)
and blew out the meter in the meter box (circuit board shown) and phone line, etc the tip of the norfolk pine is now missing
its basicly ring barked now....and will die....the lady of the house is not worried though, as she said it shades the house badly
they said it was like a huge explosion!
you can see how all the roots have been shook in the ground too
update, checking my boltec and the history of strikes, there was a strike just to my NW, correct distance, but plotted too far away, monday morning, 5:21am
(the occupants of the house were a bit vague on what day it was, I think they were still in shock)
you other Boltec guys should be able to confer
these winter time lightning strikes seem to be very powerfull...i.e cold air has more resistance, so the voltage would be higher to over come that, for a ground strike?

Re: General July Weather
Got to 7 degrees here today but did feel warmer than that around midday in the sun. Clouded over early afternoon and felt much cooler as you would expect. Sitting on 2.8 degrees at the moment with high cloud. GFS run just through is putting out some fairly large rainfall totals for Christchurch/Canterbury from Friday afternoon. Probably just a fluke run. Still a lot of snow about on the roads and around the property. Will take a few days to disappear, especially if we get frosts freezing the snow over.

Re: General July Weather
Upper air is cold so that trough coming in to the west of the North Island today has some instability with it. Will reach western Waikato early evening but be fairly weak as it crosses Auckland. The front activates again over the far north overnight. Air will be a bit more moist up there too, 13C dewpoints.

Re: General July Weather
Reached 15.4 here today very good going, considering 2 days ago. Lots of snow melt today but water around for sure. Looks like from Sunday onwards highs dominate our skies for at least a week and ECMWF seems to like highs to the end of their forecast period so a lull period on the way it seems.
