Disturbed Westerlies July
According to the models there looks like an interesting period of westerlies, this July, for New Zealand with a result of an active trough slow moving to the south of us in the "Roaring 40s" for the next week or so, starting from now.
This should result in lots of strong and raw winds over the country plus some cold temperatures to exposed areas.
Might be a bit milder in some areas too, but then we'll wait and see.

typicaly the weather pattern is the opposite straight after a NIWA long term seasonal forecast (they said lighter westerlies ), LOL
(long term that might end up being the case)

The first round of cold unstable weather crosses the North Island tomorrow with squally thunderstorms in the west, south of Auckland. Looking like quite as strong shortwave moving into the west of the NI during the afternoon.

ECMWF have this pattern going over for a period to the end of their forecast period.
I wonder if it will continue?

The sun is shining, westerly crud is missing us and passing to our north, air is fresh, ground already looks drier than it has for at least 2-3 weeks. I feel as if I've been released from a prison.

I can see people getting fed up with the wind soon. I notice Whenuapai airport had a peak gust of 52kts late this afternoon. Also, I noticed slight hail in a couple of those squally showers this afternoon in central Auckland.

Motorists trapped in snow & ice on Lindis Pass - still no snow warning for that road from Metservice.
