Squally Thunderstorms, Overnight 5 July- 6th July

Unread post by Tornado Tim »

Metservice has now issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the West of the of North Island:
7599-130f88abd60-2b33920-130f88abd60.0.png
Issued by MetService at 04:25 pm Tuesday 05 July 2011
Valid until 05:00 am Wednesday 06 July 2011
This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts:
Northland
Auckland
Great Barrier Island
Coromandel Peninsula
Waikato
Waitomo
Taumarunui
Taranaki
An active front is expected to move onto the west of the North Island late this evening i.e. Northland and Taranaki by about midnight, and then move quickly eastwards to lie east of the Coromandel Peninsula by 7am Wednesday morning. Squally thunderstorms are expected along the front. Some of these thunderstorms may become SEVERE and have the potential to produce local wind gusts of 120km/hr or more. In addition, there is a risk that one or two of these thunderstorms could produce a tornado, especially in coastal areas.

Wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous. If any tornadoes occur, they will affect very localised areas only.
It seems once the front has passed through thats when we will start see the cold upper air temps.

Here is the 3 AM 500MB Temp and SFC B4LLI chart when the front is expected to hit.

the severe thunderstorm outlook only has squalls to 110km/h yet there is a severe gale warning out with gusts to 120km/h
that should at least match?

Rickys tracker picking up strikes over the west of the NI south of Auckland. Quite a good line going through. Dark clouds here in Auckland.

was just driving into Waiuku at 1pm when a big flash of lightning, then heard the thunder in the car 2 seconds later
it was very close to Waiuku college, kids there reckoned the goal posts on the rugby field got hit

I think it took out the internet....doing this via my T stick...

we have been up to 64 knots here (116 kmh) , currently averaging over 40 knots and gusting over 50 knots
:)

internet back now :)

So which do you reckon was right, the Severe Thunderstorm Outlook with squalls to 110km/h, or the Severe Gale Warning with gusts to 120km/h? :-)

Not sure about gusts, but I see these WNW winds were at gale-force on the Waitemata (higher in the outer Gulf).

jeez the house shaking in this wind. can hear all sorts of sounds outside over the roar of the wind. just getting hail as i write this. WOW far out that sounded like the roof was lifting. shook the house so much sky tv lost clarity. not like rain fade but different. maybe shook the satellite too much.

Same here with the wind. Our roof is just over the top of the hill in front of us so our house and garden is protected from the wind but our roof is in the full wind. With each wind gust it makes the noise as if it is about to fly away like a kite. Last time like was at least 2 years ago.
