Squalls and Thunder, Western parts of both Islands 9-10 July

Unread post by jamie »

Looks like round 3 is alreay upon us.

Dale has had thunder during the night on the west coast of the South Island.

I am picking up heaps of strikes to my SW already. Too bad the Taranaki radar is out at the moment as Taranaki really looks the place to be for good storms today and tonight.

These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the east, and are expected to lie near OTAKI and THE SOUTHERN TARARUA RANGES at 12:30 pm.

- Check that drains and gutters are clear;
- Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.
During and after the storm, you should also:
- Beware of fallen trees and power lines;
- Avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding.
This warning is due to be updated or lifted by 01:00 pm Saturday 09 July 2011.

MEDIA PLEASE NOTE: This warning will be updated within the next hour or so. MetService would appreciate it being broadcast regularly during this period.

Harmless conditions in W'gton city today. Bright sun till 2pm with all the ugly stuff travellling past to the north. Then a period of cloud and a couple of light showers, and a clearance. Fresh NW occasionally strong, air now feels considerably cooler.

I thought the Tararuas would shelter the Wairarapa in stormy northwesterly conditions.

Lots of lightning to the SW through the NW of Palmy. The lightning seems to be coming from several storm cells. The most active storm cell seems to be the one to the SW, down towards Levin.

I heard a single brief rumble around the time you posted that, but assumed it wasn't thunder since there was none forecast for us...seems it was isolated as have heard nothing since. Brief heavy shower last 5 mins.
