Over 4000 strokes since midnight here or over 2000 flashes of lightning.
If this wasn't a weather forum I would most definitely have a raised eyebrow, I'm not sure 'strokes' was the word you were after ...

A beautiful day here, plenty of sunshine, no sign of showers. Maybe later...

Went for a walkabout earlier to see if there was any damage (and get some hot chips for lunch from the takeaway  ) just some minor damage around the place, the guttering at the pool, couple of street signs bent over, aesthetic damage at my place and next door, probably the worst around that I did see was next door to the miners hall, the fence there got turned into matchsticks.. but looking at how bodgey it was, no surprises it blew apart. I took a pic of it anyway lol.

Huh?

Yes Strokes was the word I was looking for. The word "stroke" has been known for a long time.

Lightning is actually comprised of 'strokes' a leader stroke and a return stroke, there is also stepped leader strokes and dart leader strokes.
Its all to do with the transfer of charges between the cloud and the ground or just in the cloud (depending on which lightning stroke occurs)

more info about strokes: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hb ... igseq.html

For reference: 1 Flash could have many strokes.

A lightning 'strike' on the other hand is very unspecific and could mean a flash or a stroke.

Interesting to see the line of storms pop up over North Auckland this afternoon. I think afternoon heating led to the development. Does seem to have been a weak frontal boundary there also.

GFS shows this cold unstable spell lasting until Thursday with an ongoing severe squall risk in western districts including Auckland.

Photo of the Norwest arch today from just north of Darfield. (for some reason I didn't use the lens hood, resulting in sun flare) Could see the snow being blown off the tops.

Very interesting weather up north! Man must admit to being slightly distracted the past few days but great to have a read on here.
