yes, quite enjoyed a short chase. Lots of squally rain!ps, sounds like it was a good move for you to have driven down to the Bombay hills NZStorm
Some very cold upper air crossing overnight, 500mb -28C at 3am, so hail on the roof. Maybe an isolated lightning strike.

Nothing here in boring old Canterbury. Just some annoying thunderstrikes from below the ground

I can hear it in Glenfield. Lots of rumbles but not very loud.

The whole house was probably shaking and it wasn't even close. Having some hail now by the sounds of it!
Not much thunder now though. Just having a shower now 2nd time today.

Re: Unstable squally western NZ 11-12th July
Heavy shower here atm with hail.
I heard a report on Zb this morning of a house loosing part of its roof at Kaiwaka,Northland. Its was reported as a tornado.
A front currently over Fiordland moves north today spreading a few squally thunderstorms into the west of the North island this afternoon. Looks like a severe squall risk will eventuate for Taranaki down to the kapiti coast. The thunder risk will reach Auckland late afternoon/early evening but likely to only affect the far west.

Re: Unstable squally western NZ 11-12th July
Heard several distant rumbles around midnight last night, but nothing interesting followed. I see my station recorded a gust of 59km/h at 3.34am which is the highest for this unsettled period so far.
Surprised at the lack of rain from this system - only 34mm this month in Howick

I'm surprised by that, ive had more than that,45mm and i'm on the eastern side.
Another interesting aspect of the current weather system has been the fact that there's been little in the way of the strong winds forecasted....thank goodness

Some savage bolts coming down now between here & Greymouth, likewise with the wind squalls, I haven't bothered picking up all the plants this morning, they will just get taken down again lol.

Re: Unstable squally western NZ 11-12th July
Massive rollers on the west coast here this morning
despite the models showing it was going to ease this morning
I see a news report that Piha residents are saying its the biggest swell for 20 years...
I would put it at getting up to 7m at the moment
if you can get to the west coast today for a look it might be worth it

Re: Unstable squally western NZ 11-12th July
It would be 1 step forward, 2 back right now Brian, Rapahoe Beach is only a few minutes up the road but I'm not going anywhere in this LOL! That last squall through here was nasssssssssty.. the guttering on the swimming pool finally gave up.
The fire siren went off a couple of minutes ago and the engine just left here too up towards that area, all the windows on a house just had its windows blown in so the scanner says.

Have a member of this household flying from Auckland to Christchurch, leaving Ak. about 1.30pm. Hope the ride's not too bumpy.
Heavy weather at times in Ashburton this morning: strong winds, hard rain, navy-blue cloud - then sunlight and a rainbow, then back to nasty again. In Mayfield now: 6.5 degrees, raining, line of white clouds moving up coast in distance. Pressure dropping.
