Tornado hits Waikanae

A tornado has ripped through Waikanae, on the Kapiti Coast north of Wellington, in unconfirmed reports.

One local, who did not want to be identified, said it had thrown a shed and tossed cars. "Bloody terrifying".

Another resident tweeted that "a small tornado crossed SH1 3km north of here. Trees down, car overturned? Many sirens.''

More information to follow.

Very fair point. Well done. That would definitly be fake in my eyes. Why do people do this? for 5 minutes of fame? its a pretty lame thing to do really.

Based on the attached warning map, from last night, the storm that was moving in more of NE direction, appeared to be the most lightning active of the storm cells. Does the fact that it was moving in a different direction to the other cells i.e. NE as opposed to E -> SE, indicate that it was more of an intense/organised storm, which sort of pushed it against the general wind flow?

a mesocyclone (rotating thunderstorm) goes against the general flow
they are right movers in the northern hemisphere, so will be left movers in the southern hemisphere
