A few sunny intervals here as well, John. Managed 1.3°C in a WSW before the last shower arrived.

Re: Polar Blast 23-25th July
Really big flakes coming down atm, no wind and so quiet, love it. Slowly increasing in depth, should have another couple hours of this. Tomorrow morning is going to be carnage on the roads, freezing temps and alot of water on the roads dont mix.

Snow shower here just before, now finished. Radar would suggest we are on the way out with this system now.

Re: Polar Blast 23-25th July
Agreed. Wind-chill would have been a factor, but generally air-temps weren't as cold as in recent days.David wrote:NZ Herald's main story at the moment is Chch dropped to -9C, and snow in Taupo.
"Forecaster WeatherWatch said temperatures in Christchurch this morning have plummeted to -9 Celsius, in Dunedin it is -6C, Wellington is -5C and in Taupo it is -2C. "
WeatherWatch must have meant wind chill temperature surely!?
Of the overnight temps on that list, only Dunedin Aero with -1.8C and Chch Aero with -1.0C got below zero, while Taupo Aero only managed 0.9C, Taupo 1.2C, Wgtn Aero 3.2C and Kelburn 2.0C.
The coldest places overnight in the S.I. were probably Ranfurly with -6.5C and Lake Tekapo with -6.0C; Lauder, Lumsden and Pukaki Aero were all just above -5C, while in the N.I, Waiouru managed -3.0C.

Re: Polar Blast 23-25th July
Impressive snow fall for the South Island. Great pics.
I heard a report on ZB of sleet in West Auckland this morning. It would have been wet hail. Not cold enough here for sleet.

5cms on my lawn but it's been thawing nicely. I see the melt is showing at the airport too with the hourly 'rainfall' figures.
Not sure how they came up with the forecast for Invercargill though. 'showers easing' when there's been none since I got up at 7am. Nice to see the sun and a light northerly at the moment.

Perhaps another good shower about to come through in next few minutes going by radar. Although, sun is shining now!
