A friend of mine took these two photos:
He says the dark line in front of the plane was clearly visible even to his eye, which presumably is why he took the photo. I can't offer any explanation, anyone got any ideas?

The dark line will be shading off the aircraft. Must have been some haze up there.

You could be right there, Steven. I can remember seeing something like this in Central Otago with planes flying across from Mamona (Dunedin International Airport) to Aussie.

Yes i recon Brian is spot on.its a shadowing effect within the atmosphere's water vapour.Manukau heads obs wrote:isnt it a shadow from the actual vapour trail?

Its an old fashioned single prop centred plane seen edge on from the front coming in to land
