Touched -1C this morning but since then the temp has been nicely rising, now 10C. Would be a great day to go out fishing, but still a couple months before the elephants arrive ;)

The remainder of August looks to be dry as a bone with highs well and truly dominating the country (apart from a brief flick) Another great fine clear, windless day in store.

was getting wet up this way, needed to dry out...
sunshine is good, for grass growth, but need warmer nights to bring up the soil temperature again, which I see is at 8.6C at Rickys place
was 11C not that long ago...

Will this August end up being colder than normal for NZ, thanks to the southerly outbreak of this last week?

Foggy here, too. Got down to -0.7°C earlier but now over 3°C with a very light N breeze.

About 2°C colder here so far than my average for the previous 9 years ... average minimum (0.2°C) is 3°C colder and I've recorded 14 days where temps were below 0 compared with an average of 5.8 days for the month.

Hawaii be better probably as no war there though but need a green card for USA.
Reason why it was clear so long because of the trough left over from the S advancing north,if it was later in the year, the trough wouldnt have existed and instead pressures low to the chathams and it wouldve packedup after the front.
Anyway can someone answer what freezing fog is?

Northern half of the NI has done quite well for sun this month. Your complaints are not justified.

It certainly will. Nearly all of the country is at least 1C below average so far, and a significant part by more than 1.5C. Should be the coolest August since 1992, possibly even 1972. Compensation for some - very dry in the western 2/3 of the SI (less than 10% in a small area of Westland). Quite sunny in northern 2/3 of NI and W/NW parts of the SI.
