A great day altogether; much the same here: was 15.2 deg., now 15.0; slight NW breeze; sunny & blue skies; thrushes & chaffinches singing their spring songs.

Re: General August Weather
I remember September 1st is officially the first day of spring but nature has been saying that it is for a bit longer.....
Pollen is everywhere, makes washing and waxing the car useless! As soon as you drive it you have it all on your car again.

Re: General August Weather
I was going to put these 2 photos up on the 'Photographs' section but that seems to pre-occupied by bird photos at the moment
These were 2 shots of a castellatus looking cloud form moving up over Canterbury this afternoon.
As the barometer pressure is high, this could be a good forewarning of active cold fronts moving up over Canterbury this coming Spring/Summer

Re: General August Weather
They either dissipated quickly or became boring looking, ie. flat as they progressed further north, glaciated bits dissolving. Mind you the surface baro is sitting around the 1030hPa mark.
Imagine if it was about 990hPas if so, these clouds could develop into something which could be a bit more fun.
..anyway, I reckon that these clouds were probably remnants of last weeks cold weather event.

Re: General August Weather
it always puzzles me your reference to barometer John re thunderstorms
up this way we can get late afternoon thunderstorms in a high barometer
for spring time thunderstorms, you need a good SW frontal change....i.e not a high pressure over you...but that is a bit different...the only correlation to barometer is the weather pattern....its not the low barometer directly causing the thunderstorm...
you can still get thunderstorms in summer in canty under a high pressure, with convergence....yes?

Re: General August Weather
I think for thunder in Canterbury you need more pronounsed troughing ( colder in the upper levels) )than up here due to the drier air down there so that would suggest a lower borometer.Manukau heads obs wrote:it always puzzles me your reference to barometer John re thunderstorms

We didn't see any storms last summer in Canterbury or the north, can only hope 2011/12 in more interesting.

Re: General August Weather
yes but more about the Canterbury Plains,my area on the other hand can get storms during humid light N- NE airflows in conjunction with summer daytime heating.spwill wrote: I think for thunder in Canterbury you need more pronounsed troughing ( colder in the upper levels) )than up here due to the drier air down there so that would suggest a lower borometer.
The MS had strong to gusty NW winds in the forecast today dont know where they got that from, even where i was working today at 1000m there was little wind.
Been a lovely with a high of 16.2

I have found in my years as a thunderstorm enthusiast for Canterbury, a lower surface barometer makes it easier for thunderstorms to form rather than say around 1020hPa or above, especially when heating has been a factor against a cooler change, despite a fresh onshore wind, ie NE.
There have been isolated instances that a very weak thunderstorm or a 'break down in the atmosphere' ie. a flash of lightning, has occured in a SW frontal change under circumstances similar to the situation yesterday, but that being very rare.
Thunderstorms form in different situations up your way.

Re: General August Weather
The daytime heating/convergent NE is a common TS ingredient right down the eastern side of the South Island but yes, where you are near the foot hills there will be occasions when storms occur over elevated ground under weak troughing.Richard wrote:

Re: General August Weather
Our ts are better in an easterly or NE type anticyclone situation or in a front changing the wind from NE to NW or W,Canterburys thunder in an W anticyclonic situation/WSW situation where the wind is modified as a NE and a W or SW change arrives on it.

Re: General August Weather
A cool, fresh and gusty westerly up in the Port Hills when I went a walk this morning but worth it for the view of the snowy peaks
Still some patches of snow in sheltered places even down to about 250m. Now up to 20°C here on the Plains.

The Met site shows Hokitika as having had barely 10mm of rain in the last 30 days. It may catch up a little in the next few days, but not too drastically by the looks of things.

Man! What an awesome day it is today! 21 degrees currently and very little wind so speak of. To think just over a week ago it was heavily snowing! 22 degree range today from minus 1 this morning.
