Today in Mayfield has been sunny; then late afternoon clouds drifted in from the south and southeast and obscured the nearby foothills. Temp. currently down to 5.1 degrees; humidity risen to 65%.
We shall see what the morrow brings.

Re: General August Weather
better to report the dew point reading than humidity (which is only relative)
just my 2 cents worth (inflated for inflation)

A sunny morning in Mayfield, a slight frost; currently 0.9 degrees & 70% humidity: I regret I am unable to report anything about dewpoint readings.

Re: General August Weather
I think what Brian is getting at is that Relative Humidity (RH) is relative to the temperature, i.e. assuming that moisture in a given parcel of air remains the same, RH will naturally go up as the temp goes down and vice versa, as warmer air can hold more moisture. So dew-points are generally a better reflection of moisture levels.
You could use a table or dew-point calculator such as this one, e.g. a temp of 0.9C and RH of 70% gives a DP of -4C. Bare in mind however that, depending on quality, hygrometers generally aren't as accurate as thermometers.
Edit: Changed link.

Re: General August Weather
Still sunny in Mayfield, however cloud lowering and approaching from south & southeast; 7.6 degrees; humidity fallen to 57%; wind from south-east has freshened over the last hour. Dark cloud on SSE horizon. If anything of significance occurs I'll report it on the other [potential snow] thread.

Re: General August Weather
Classic balls up from very pregnant lady (name?) on TV1 weather tonight, she must have known that it was snowing Dunedin in yet she said currently 11 with an overnight low of 4deg,i had thought they all had to do some form of meteorology training to be on TV in presenting the country's weather.
She is just bloody hopeless to have not clicked onto that.

Yes, that's Rebecca, of what ever her name is, I've forgotten. I never watch the TV weather when she's on. Why can't they have that new Promo guy from MetService?Richard wrote:Classic balls up from very pregnant lady (name?) on TV1 weather tonight, she must have known that it was snowing Dunedin in yet she said currently 11 with an overnight low of 4deg,i had thought they all had to do some form of meteorology training to be on TV in presenting the country's weather.

Re: General August Weather
To get a record low high here tomorrow it'll need to drop a bit in the next 2 hrs...if it's still 10C at midnight that will ruin it LOL.

Looks like a trough moves across Northland/Auckland today. Isolated heavy falls of hail may be possible.

Re: General August Weather
NIWA is quoted as saying it was Auckland's coldest day (Herald). However a max. of only 7.8C was recorded at Albert Park in July 1930, and that site is warmer than the airport or any other current site being quoted. Pre-1930 records (to 1909 only for soundness) would probably reveal an even lower tmax, but the CliFlo data only goes back to 1930 at present.

I think what they forgot to mention is that those figures quoted are for Akld Aero.'The snow will go on' - NZ Herald
5:30 AM Tuesday Aug 16, 2011
...Climate scientist Georgina Griffiths of the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research said yesterday was the coldest day ever recorded in Auckland. The temperature got up to only 8.2C - compared with the previous lowest high of 8.7C, on July 4, 1996. The last time snow settled on the ground in the city was 1939. It fell to ground level at the airport in 1976. ...
Owairaka (central isthmus) also recorded a low T-max 7.7C in July, 1952.
Update:
As suspected, that T-max of 8.2C was actually taken around dawn (the calendar-day began with 11.0C just after midnight). Akld Aero's T-max from 9am yesterday was actually 8.1C, as was Ardmore Aero's...

Looks like we are in for more than a week of fine weather, awesome! GFS has a big anticyclone crossing the country very slowly, central pressure up to 1038 hPa
