I notice all of last night and this morning all the shower clouds fall apart before they move inland, none of the forecasts seem to reflect this? No precip here since about 7pm yesterday.

It looks like what will happen is sleety/rain until about 4pm although id rather have snow or sun than rain, but snow showers in from about 4pm onwards overnight maybe a further 5-10cm.
Not as much as what it was looking but its something anyway, still plenty to smile about anyway :-)

Another potential day at home tomorrow then? Here is hoping!! 25cm btw on the front lawn, have been outside clearing the driveway. Hopefully it does get sound to sea level again tonight, but the hills arent out of the woods yet.

Whilst not as impressive as the snow down south, this event has been exciting for us Wellingtonians. The snow in the CBD yesterday between 11-12, and 2-3pm was crazy. We then had an intense wave of hail from 4:30. It culminated in an intense thunderstorm with heavy hail around 6pm. The hail was so heavy, that roads in the southern and eastern suburbs were VERY treacherous. Even small hills became almost impassable in cars.

I had a great view of the hail and lightning etc whilst siting in the spa with the door to the spa room wide open! :) The hail was bouncing off the concrete outside, and up into the spa inside the room. One clap of thunder was less than 1 second after the lightning (probably struck the top of Seatoun Heights from the looks), and was VERY loud.

Thought you might enjoy the photo I took this morning of the snow on Hawkins Hill, with the setting Moon in the background.
Snow 15082011 001crop-sml2.jpg
There is still heavy snow evident down to 250m on Hawkins Hill and further north around the wind turbine. First time in 10 years in Wellington that I have seen snow last more than an hour or 2 on Hawkins Hill.

according to reports on weatherwatch.co.nz there is snow on the highest ranges in northland (600m)
the sounding reports from M/S did suggest snow down to that altitude...
and the kaipara area did bore the brunt of the shower actitivity swinging around the low to the west of northland
hummmm

Overcaste, some light rain showers and 6C , still very cold. Daytime heating would increase the chance of wintry showers by increasing instability as we saw yesterday.

Seems Auckland has the moisture with the incoming rain/sleet showers, as with Hamilton we are in the wrong place.

A shame Hamilton hasn't been getting as much....
Currently 6.0°C and overcast.....

a general NE flow developing over the auckland area now...boy, at 6C, thats the coldest NE wind you ever get ( a NE wind is usually one of the warmer winds in this area) !!!
baro is dropping a little, so that low to the west is deepening slowly...which will drop the temperatures a bit...

I see Tony is going for possibily of snow showers to near sea level this evening and tonight? whats the chances of that, and is most of that meant for mainly inland places or more coastal chance?

It should get colder again after dark, so the sleety showers will be more likely to say snowy than start melting as they are now. But I dont expect a fall anywhere near what we had last night.

Temperature has been up to 2.5 degrees this morning, but has fallen now to 1.8 degrees.
After snow falling again between 8am & 9am, it's been raining with occasional rattly bits on the roof and some smudgy bits hitting the window.
The southeast wind has risen again to be noisy in the pines and booming in the chimney.
