Re: Tasman Low / Active Front - Sep 11-14
Looks like more unstable air coming into the west of the North Island this evening with a thunder risk in the west. But the system doesn't look great in the gfs. Colder conditions over NZ tomorrow with hail!

Exactly 40mm rainfall in the 24hrs to 8am today. Not huge at all but the most we've had here for a wee while.

Looks like a wild night ahead for the north. Potential for tornadoes according to MetService and Weather Watch. I see a bit of lightning activity to the West on the tracker already. Hope we get a good light show that doesn't involve being stuck on a train for three hours to view!

Got a call from a friend in Mangonui (Far North), his neighbours house was hit by lightning. The power is still on and all electronics in the house have apparently died. He also reports friends a kilometer away have lost electronics. He commented it's taken out half the town.
I asked him to get damage photo's if he can.

Re: Tasman Low / Active Front(s) - Sep 11-14
that CB line that passed over the far north last night looked impressive on the sat pic at the time
went through like a freight train!
looked to be associated with the terminus of the jet stream across the north tasman?

Hubby in Wellington CBD. Lightning, thunder and hail. Hail apparently set off a car alarm.

It was a huge storm, the whole house shook and there was so much hail. I think we caught the edge of it. Hubby said it was worse in the CBD.

Re: Tasman Low / Active Front(s) - Sep 11-14
Pretty close. It didn't really "rush in" at all, so the hail and lightning was not a shock to me. After a morning with some semi-bright periods and weakish S/SSW winds but no proper clearance, conditions became very dark (as dark as I've ever seen at this time of year and day) and there was some rotation in the general cloud mass that I could see. After about 30 minutes the show got underway in earnest as the lowest clouds raced in from the south. Temperatures felt very cold well before the hail started.Michael wrote:pictures please..

Later on there was a period of brilliant sunshine and azure skies but another cloudband has moved in, so there may be more showers, though it doesn't look drastic at present.

Re: Tasman Low / Active Front(s) - Sep 11-14
Just watched the segment on the storm on 3news, They quoted Metservice saying " Hail like this hasn't fallen in close to a decade" That is complete and utter rubbish!
The Tauranga/Papamoa storm in 09 was much worse than that and had much more hail.
This is of course if that statement is applied to the whole country which wasn't made clear.
