Lightning over Coromandel atm is extremely frequent....
If the storm line stays there they should issue a warning on it, as that place is known for big slips.

Woke to occasional thunder at about 1.30am, but not frequent enough for me to bother getting up.

Yes, lightning show over the Coromandel looked good from here once the cloud cleared. :D

I see New Plymouth Aero recorded 86mm for the 24 hrs to midnight. Reports of some flooding around Taranaki yesterday. Lightning also reportedly knocked out the Inglewood police station's phones, while another strike apparently set the town's railway crossing bells ringing non-stop. 8-o

A few more snippets...
Heavy rain continues to hit the country - Stuff
Last updated 07:47 04/10/2011

Heavy rain has lashed the country overnight, leading to a second day of surface flooding and slips - and more wet weather is still to come. Lightning struck more than 20,000 times in the last 24 hours and heavy rain fell in the upper South Island and North Island.

[MetService forecaster Chris Noble] said Taranaki received 100mm of rain and Nelson saw between 80 and 100mm. Near Taupo, there had been about 60 to 80mm of rain, and 13mm within an hour in the city.

Most of the rain is in Mid and North Canterbury with no rain recorded in Timaru.

I also got woken just after 1:00am, this morning, by the odd clap of thunder. Lightning flashes were probably only one every 5 minutes.

We've had 28mm of rain from this system, so far.

Actually I would prefer to say we are greatful for the rain thats fallen- needed for sure- but NOT "long may it continue" in recognition in particular of our ChCh folk whose drainage systems are not prepared for signifcant prolonged rain.

I refer to the Halswell, Heathcote and Avon river systems, that have yet to be tested since Sept 2011 (thankfully) by a signficant rain event- quite unbelievable that is!

About an inch is enough thanks.

Razor, when I say long may it continue I am talking about the more persistent solid light rain, we dont get heavy rain falling prolongly very often at all. Its drizzle/light rain over the last hour, this is good for the Canterbury area, especially since from the 8th October it is hand held hoses for Gardens only..

A small taste of summer with the higher dewpoint temperatures today,19°C, DP 15°C at Greylynn as well.

Nice to see some strong Cb/Cu tops yesterday evening as the front was departing. Good to have some sunshine today after 3 days of quite dull weather.

21mm rain has eased now to light drizzly rubbish. Main band is just south of Lake Ellesmere in the sea. GFS had forecasted that to become stationery over CHCH but its tracked further south than first thought.

I agree NZstorm, bring on summer! I'm lucky enough to have today off :p
19.3C now in Howick. Would be in the low 20s with a W or NW flow.

Finished with 21mm here most falling overnight. BP is sheltering us as the low does a swing it seems, hence why all the rain is south of the city.

I see last night's Severe Thunderstorm Outlook update has a moderate risk of the odd thundery shower today for Northland and Auckland from mid morning. Plus a low risk further S this arvo.
