Currently 19C, 13C dewpoint, some cloud, mod to fresh SW and that haze again. I thought it was salt haze from the strong SW wind over recent days but perhaps it is smoke from OZ. The burnoff season in Australia is more June/ July so it would be likely from a wild fire.

Its been a nice day in the end here certainly a good weekend to get everything planted for the season, although most of the plants are in now anyway this is the time to plant them.
Managed a healthy 7.5mm from last nights rain, so thats just over 43mm in the last week.

And the strong inversion present over the Tasman certainly favours that haze making it here. Todays Whenuapai sounding shows the low level inversion which traps pollution.

Had email from a friend who's at Bowen Mountain west of Sydney, this is where the smokes coming from

Oh it's a horrid day here,Sunny, 29° expecting 29° tomorrow, 33° Monday (22° Tuesday)
It's all yellow outside all day. The light going through the smoke where they are doing Hazard Reduction burns at Kurrajong Heights. We should wake up tomorrow to smoke hanging around everywhere 'til it warms up again.
You can send the rain up here if you like, we could do with some more water in the tanks.

Well what a night we had here, they were right about 130km winds and was the worse kind of NW off the mountains too,it would be calm for about 4-5 mins then all of a sudden a huge massive gust would hit,30 seconds later calm again, this went on most night and i didn't get much sleep for the noise,at some stage the power was knocked out, looked up Culverden and see they didnt get much wind at all only 15km away
Kelp it warm though, didnt go below 18deg and now the winds gone now its looking like it might start to rain.

I see the media are labelling gusty winds as small twisters now...

a high over the NI with lots of low level stability/inversion often causes bit lee trough winds in the SI or lower NI east coast when a front tries to squeeze underneath it...

TNVZ has a pic (c/o Stuff) of what they call a 'tornado on Lake Wakatipu'. Looks more like eddys at best to me?

'Twisters, gales rip through Southland' - TVNZ

Looking at yesterday's peak gusts prior to midnight, I see Queenstown Aero got to 109 km/h, as did Kelburn in Wgtn, Gore and Lauder to 119 km/h, Birchwood to 117 km/h and Pukaki Aero right up there with 146 km/h. While in the north, Castlepoint in the Wairarapa was at 145 km/h.

Doesnt look like will see as much rain as forecasted. Radar shows the band had disappeared. Overcast skies out there this morning after a windy night.

Yeah was the same down here some of the gusts must have been over 100km and then it would go reasonably calm for a bit then come in real strong, you could hear some of the gusts in distance before they hit.

Gone southerly now and its drizzling. Currently 8 degrees.

Those MS figures are only to midnight though Richard. Gusts after then are likely to be higher.

Stuck at about 18°C overnight here as well with gusty NWer until the southerly came through at 5am which dropped the temp 8°C in about 25 minutes. It then turned light northerly here about 20 minutes ago...

The highest it got to Nev was 61.1km at 3.00 am,though i have noticed Culverden doesn't get nowhere near the amount of NW that i do where i am,thats why i sometimes jokingly refer to my area as NWGrandcentral.
Speaking of which the NW is back again now which arrived at 4.00pm and pushed the temp up to 20.5deg
