Yes probably should have said more North Canterbury, the graph below was of two weeks ago shows Rangiora in the red area,i don't know how much rain Rangiora recently but we only had 20mm over the last few days, its not enough when soil moisture levels were so dry to start withmelja wrote:Surface paddock water around rangiora so no shortage of soil moisture here, now we just need to get rid of these crap cold days.
Ever since they gave the climate outlook its been the opposite here.

Re: General October Weather
Yes Rangiora to Oxford got more rain this week than out east in the likes of Kaiapoi, just 25mm since Monday but close to 40mm at work near Cust.
Rangiora has been in the firing line for those heavy showers and brief thunderstorm set ups that develope inland and head E-NE towards the coast, quite often they miss out east all together except for around Amberley.
Certainly alot lusher around here than what it was and i know it is spring but we still do need alot more rain if we are to face a dry hot summer.

Been very dry around here Theres been a trend since about may for the southerlies to bypass South Canterbury and flow inland around the Rangatata river. Tuesdays 14mm was the best rain weve had since early july Although it was very localaised with not much elsewere in South Canterbury.

Re: General October Weather
40mm around Cust is good going Jase.
Seems to vary depending where you are,a friend at Loburn recons that before the rain a few days ago it was the driest he's seen it at that time of years,he only got 24mm recently and still says they need more,so melja i think that if we happen to be lucky enough get more rain soon and you're forced to replace ya slippers with flippers ......tough!! many other areas still could do with more as a result of the dry winter going into summer.

Re: General October Weather
Yes Rangiora does seem to have got quite a bit more rain than other areas. Steady rain here over the last hour and a half. 3mm so far and just under 6 degrees. Looking like a low will dominate Western and Northern areas early next week before a high rolls in from the Tasman.

Re: General October Weather
We have lost our sunshine today in Auckland, cloudy 15C, adjacent light showers in the west. Hopefully the cloud will burn back a bit during the day.
Looks to be a thunderstorm risk over the upper North Island Monday due moisture advection with a low. Maybe Tuesday too. Next few runs of the gfs will confirm.

Re: General October Weather
Little bit of sleet falling at the moment in a heavier shower cell. Main rainband was quick moving and has past, just a few isolated showers remain, a nice few mm's this morning.

18Z run of gfs suggests potential for significant rainfall in the Bay of Plenty Monday into Tuesday due to slow moving front.

Re: General October Weather
Brief dollop of rain this morning, now getting heavy showers mixed with small hail coming through in what looks like a crop shower formation on the radar which could be with us for a few more hours yet.
I will be listening out for a clap of thunder in some of these as they are quite beefy.

Re: General October Weather
Looks quite lots of rain in the top 1/3 because of slow moving anticyclones and we are the meat in the sandwich.

I thought I heard a long rumble of thunder just after 1pm, but it could of been a plane taking off at the airport. (what it was taking off I wouldn't know )Jasestorm wrote:I will be listening out for a clap of thunder in some of these as they are quite beefy.
There were some coldies around then.

Re: General October Weather

Re: General October Weather
Shes still blowing out there. Metservice has average wind speed at 50km/h gusting to 69km/h. Tomorrow looks to be a much more pleasant feeling day and Wednesday looks great too. Kerikeri getting a good soaking in this quicker moving front of the two. 26mm for them so far. BOP totals will be interesting come Wed Night. Respite between the two systems for them, the GFS run 30 hours ago had very big totals for the area, its backed off somewhat but still could be substancial.

Re: General October Weather
Strongest NE weve had here for a long time has certainly stepped up a notch tonight, gusting a good 50-60kmh at times.
Currently 12C with spotty rain just setting in now, tomorrow i wouldnt be surprised to see us hit the 23C mark.

Re: General October Weather
Was woken in the night by the strong winds and rain smashing against the bedroom window (rare occurrance) being from the north like that here. The wind has not let up at all over the past 18 or so hours, gusting to gale. Got 2mm here.
