Lucky Richard it was always going to be not good conditions here for thunder today, tomorrow is much better in terms of getting heating first up and convergence set ups bewteen NE/SW as winds will be alot lighter than today so slow storm motions i would think.
So its better west and in the foothills today and east of the foothills tomorrow.
I did drive through a shower on the way to work with large drops of rain in it, the sun is trying very hard to come out though now.

Slow moving front across inland SI - looks like much more precipitation there. Only some slight drizzle earlier in Chch, but a cold, gusty southerly here though.

Not a drop here (apart from a very light mist/drizzle for all of 5 mins early morning). Concrete has not got wet. Looks like the stuff from Malborough is heading into the Wellington region soon. Metservice keeping an eye on a low which could deepen off the Canterbury Coast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Radar is not showing how heavy this rain is at the moment in yet i would have thought the cloud was high enough that it would.

Nice to have the sun here today, any showers were light and brief, max 19C. I see sunshine hrs are well down across NZ for Oct so far, reverse of the sunny Sep.

A big weekend in Auckland with the semi final Rugby games, hopefully not much in the way of showers and the All Blacks have a win.

Richard wrote::D No worries John, its looking interesting already looking at the radar, developing showers in South Canterbury even though are moving in a SW direction is still a good sign and then there's some other build ups just north of Kaikoura that i can see from here, this is even before the sun is up \:D/ good sign _b
Nothing much in the trip to Timaru with overcast and grey skies with drizzly rain to the other side of Ashburton.
It was starting to clear with the sun coming out when we left at 3pm.
Back to grey skies coming back to ChCh ,well here with some light patchy rain.

Yes it did. I was in Renwick today and plenty of nearby lightning and sharp crisp thunder. Got some heavy rain mid afternoon, with reports of heavy hail not too far away but I didnt see any.

Blenheim doesn't really seem to get to many thunder days as far as I can tell. But then neither does Christchurch unless you go find them.

Ended up with a 11mm of rain today, much needed too, after all given that this area will often miss out on the SW rains of late that the rest of Canterbury receives.

Now what will tomorrow bring?? :-k

Looking at that map it clearly shows a pattern that I have noticed occuring over the last few months of the southerlies bypassing much of Otago and South Canterbury and then flowing inland north of the Rangitata river.
Very dry from Around Timaru Southwards as they have completely missed all the lastest rainfalls, at least here there has been some rain lately.

Light frost here this morning with a bit of ice on the car.

Abit of a pitty the southerly has stuck around all day, really needed that convergence between NE/SW oh well still looked like some shower activity more so up your way Richard.
It is looking like a wet week ahead maybe 40-50mm for some places which will be much needed before summer.

A mostly fine day, I see Greylynn got to 20C mid afternoon.

Dunedin in the firing line for some rain this week , they have had a very dry spring down there so far.

Should be an interesting couple of days Tuesday/Wednesday for the eastern South Island with Dunedin to Timaru looking quite wet on Tuesday and further north more into Wednesday. GFS going with 80mm for Christchurch at the moment. So the city could see 50ish.

Yes, that's why I have been buzy doing the lawns today and clearing up the muck after our shelter belts were trimmed.

Yes looking like its going to be very wet to the south, what gets me mildly excited is this area should be beneath the complex low north of the front,so hopefully instability can produce something interesting _b
