It was windy, but the winds weren't that severe here, so enjoyed a good night's sleep, but heard the southerly come through around 5am, though.
It must of been really strong coming down those mountain passes, making it gustier inland than say, across the plains, here.
The NE here this afternoon was quite fresh at times but it has eased off a little now with some of the low cloud clearing away allowing weak sunshine to come through.

Yes only just noticeable the wind here overnight, possibly only with the odd gust to 40kmh and when the NWer arrived yesterday afternoon it only briefly gusted up for about 15 minutes then died down completly.
Also had some brief light rain at work around mid morning, but was quite facinating watching the lower level cloud pass one way with the mid level going the other.

Kelp it warm though, didnt go below 18deg and now the winds gone now its looking like it might start to rain.
Was still quite windy here in Culverden, blew my chairs across the deck a few times. where are you looking for how much wind we got? also power went out at 4.45am for around 5 minutes here.

You know it must be pouring down on the West Coast side of Mt Cook when you see blue patches on the radar

Have a good and safe flight back to Darwin Will! :)

Chase heaps of storms for us eh, as I think we will have a pathetic season here due to stupid La Nina coming back again.
Australia it seems will have a great chase season.......

I think there is a chance we will get some decent convection this summer, I'm picking it to be a warmer than average, humid season. Last summer was 100% stable but no two summers are the same.

Looks like another sparkling day today for the north after the low cloud burns off.

I see Castlepoint in the Wairarapa recorded gusts to 167 km/h not long after midnight yesterday (Tue).

Also a little more info on the so called 'mini-twisters' at Lake Wakatipu/Queenstown (gusts of 109 km/h at Queenstown Aero appear to have peaked around 5-7pm on Monday)...
Jo Blick, communications officer at Queenstown Lakes District Council, says: “I saw a mini twister from my kitchen window on Poole Lane. “There was a great big line of breakwater and then you could see little water spouts coming off it. It was quite bizarre.”

[Plus a reader's comment] I saw two broad water spouts myself at about 9:00pm between Kelvin Heights and Mt Cecil.. thay would be about 30m high and about 15m diameter... lasting about 5- 10 seconds and thier water content was blown on land. The water in the lake was blown to a swell and white caps where easilly whipped off to a horrozontal rain.
- Mountain Scene

Residents said three twisters ripped through the split-level units without warning, tearing up perspex surrounds, smashing windows and uprooting plants.

those a whirwinds which show up well over water
caused by the terrain around the lake
they are commen in the marlborough sounds and even lake taupo if the wind is strong enough

^ Yes, that's what I reckon too. I also suspect that the damage was more likely caused by exceptionally strong gusts rather than the whirlwinds themselves.

When going to bed last night GFS was looking at 20mm plus for CHCH today but its completely written that off. The rain band is unlikely to deliver more than 2mm to us. Should be a mainly dry day with this quick small band moving through.
