That storm will be on the front, heating would create a west coast sea breeze against the general NE flow and create local convergence.jamie.haultain wrote: the cell just north of great barrier has suddenly come into life. If thats happening over the ocean it should happen over land should it not?

cloud cover increased here
so not much going to happen by the looks
looks instead like a day near Joplin waiting for the cloud cover to break...

Have just had our first glimpses of sun today, humid 19 degrees now. But there's no west coast sea breeze looking at your station Brian...

The rain band is becoming nice and established over the BOP now. The next 24 hours will be interesting!

The rain looks to be several hours away from here. Will be interesting to see how heavy it is.

Re: Thunderstorms possible 11-14 October, North Island
ground hog day here for us with another 13mm or so overnight
looks to have been a convergence/collision zone of different air masses combined with a lee trough, orographic lift on the coastal hills, from kaipara south

Re: Thunderstorms possible 11-14 October, North Island
Looks like there could be some good heating over Northland today so Isolated thunderstorms may develop over western Northland, maybe western north Auckland also. Depends on how skies clear/amount of heating.
Tomorrow (Thursday) the cold upper trough starts to advance onto the North Island with afternoon thunderstorms/hail likely in central and eastern parts of the NI.

Re: Thunderstorms possible 11-14 October, North Island
The colder upper trough moves onto the NI this afternoon and thunderstorms will actually develop today but they'll be over central and eastern areas and moving away in an upper level N flow.
Looking forward to some brighter weather in Auckland.

Slightly OT but, around the BoP I see MS recorded max-gusts of 135 km/h at White Island yesterday and 105 km/h at the Mamaku Radar. BoP main-centres also receiving around 70-100mm over the last couple of days.
